Cowboybobs -> Help!! What are Matts used for and How???? (5/2/2012 4:25:28 PM)

Hi ya'll!
Can someone point me to a good tutorial either here, or elsewhere, that explains what the matts in the toolkits and themkits are used for, and more importantly, how to use them from a newbies point of view? (ie.. dont assume I know anything!!) probably a dumb question,, but I aint gonna learn if I dont ask!
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
CB

One way of demonstrating what a matte does is by using an example.

Put a picture face up on a table. Put a blank piece of paper on top of it. You cannot see the picture, right? Cut circles and squares out of the middle area of the blank piece of paper. The holes let the picture show through.

Demonstrating how to make mattes work is directly related to the software you use to create your videos.

You need to post a little more about your workflow.

Definitely agree with Jim. Depending on what your editor is, that will make a difference in how everyone can assist (i.e. Premiere, Final Cut, Vegas, etc). There are some great tutorials here that I can point you to on the Vegas/Premiere side of the house if you use those. Let us know! :-)

Thanks for the reply ya'll....
I'm using premiere pro CS4...I've taken a video and put it in the timeline, then take a matt and put it on different tracks, moved the video around on top, and under the matt, and I never see it. I need to understand how this works... I'm sure there's a real good reason they are on the disks, and probably will open up some great new editing ideas, but right now... I'm stumped...
