Tomcat84 -> Track Matte troubles in Premiere CS3 (1/2/2008 8:40:00 AM)

Hi all, my first post here, and unfortunately for me, it is because I want Premiere to do something and I can't figure out how to get it done easily :)

Situation: I want to create some end titles/credits for my project, and what i want is for a portion of the screen to have text, and another portion to have for example a still image, with the rest being black background.

However I don't want the image to just sit there, I want to pan or zoom on the image but I don't want it to move around over the background. Basicly, as if you are looking through a frame and someone is moving the picture around behind that.

So I thought I would use a track matte. I've got my still image on video 1, I made a JPG in PS that is black with a white rectangle cutout for a frame and I put that on video 2. Apply the trackmatte effect to my still image, point it to video 2 using luma. So the frame shows up. Now I thought that if i would use the motion effect and keyframe the picture, that the picture would move around behind the matte as i intend.

Unfortunately, the entire frame moves with the same part of the picture behind it. If I keyframe the matte object, then the frame moves over different parts of the picture (basicly the reverse of what i want, i want the picture moving behind the frame, not the frame moving over the picture).

What i did find, is that i keyframe both of them, and basicly mirror what i do (+20 movement on one = -20 on the other) I pretty much get what i want, except the frame sometimes slightly changes size.

But it is a pretty laborious process, so i am hoping that someone here can tell me a quicker and simpler way of achieving what I want. Am i doing something wrong with the track matte, or should i use something else entirely? Or should i use After Effects?

Thank you for any help and tips!

I can't offer any suggestions on this, but I can welcome you to the forums!  I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Disclaimer: I’m not a Premiere Guru – there may be an easier way to do this, but the following will work!

You are very close to getting this. I think if you swap the background with the video clip you want to frame, it’ll work. Here’s how I did it:

1. Create a Matte that is white with the framed area in black (you can just “Reverse” the Track Matte key if you have to – no biggee).

2. Arrange your clips on the timeline:

* Video 3: overlay matte
* Video 2: background animation (***OR, if you just want black - put a black still image here!***)
* Video 1: video clip

3. Add a Track Matte Key to the clip on Video 2: Effects > Video Effects > Keying > Track Matte Key.

4. In the Effects Control window (for the clip on Video 2), select the Track Matte Key and set the Matte to Video 3 and set the Composite Using to Luma Key.

5. Click the Toggle Track Output off for the Video 3 track.

6. Use the Motion tool to slide the video clip in Video 1 around under your matted composite.

I have not done this in some time so I am going by memory but you need to have your picture in a new sequence and then include that sequeunce in you first sequence timeline and then apply your matte to it.  As for keyframing the movements you need to apply those to the picture sequence.  Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the pointers guys, but I also posted this on a forum i stumbled on at creativecow.net and through that i got an even simpler solution for my problem. So simple that i cannot believe i didnt think of it and am currently busy slamming my head into the wall

The solution is:

Photoshop, make a solid black image, cut out the frame that i want (background transparent) so i have a black solid with a transparent frame. Save a .gif out of that and put over my picture in Premiere. Dont even need to use Track Matte or anything!

Once again, cant believe i didnt think of it myself haha

Thanks for the pointers though folks! good forum :)

I, too, am going nuts.  In Premiere Pro 1.5, my tracks are:  Video 1 Jumpback; Video 2 Still Image; Video 3 matte.  I put track matte key on Video 2, having it reference video 3 as the matte.  Then turn off visibility on video 3.   Now if I try to move the still image on video 2 UNDER the matte, both the still and matte move together.  How do I get the matte on top to stay still and move the still under it?

I'm sorry, it's probably easy, but I've tried everything I could find in the help forums.

Also, yes, I did try making the matte resized in a separate sequence, and the same with the photo, but still can't get them to move independently from each other.
