Hi,
Just brought a couple SD toolkits and starting to use the Juicer to output the video files.
I use Vegas 7.0 as my NLE and am working in PAL Widescreen

My Juicer version is 3.03 Build 2.70 (updated).

I am trying to output the video files such that it fits VEGAS PAL Widescreen template and notice the following.
The settings given in the Juicer 720X576 PAL Widescreen 25 (1.42) template outputs a file that would not fit into the VEGAS 7.0 PAL Widescreen template.

After a couple of frustating tries, I see that in VEGAS I need to set in the Event Pan\Crop menu to disable the "Maintain aspect ratio" cause no other options can give me the 16:9 widescreen effect.

Now having gotten a "solution" which I find funny, cause we are "stretching" the pixels into lower quality in Vegas. whereas I would rather render out a correct file from the Juicer

I checked and find the Juicers' aspect ratio and Vegas aspect ratios are different.
Juicers' : 1.42
Vegas: 1.4568

Also another minor point DJ's pages give a guide that for PAL, Field order is best to be Upper (Odd), while Vegas's is for PAL, field order is best to be Lower (Even)

That leaves me to the question:
For PAL Widescreen, is the ratio supposed to be 1.42 or 1.4568???
From a Vegas rendered out resultant file viewed on a 16:9 LCD TV, it appears 1.4568 is the correct one.

I tried manually setting the aspect ratio in the Juicer 1.4568 but the preview screen does not show any difference. Either that or it does not accept a different ratio

How can one output a ratio 1.4568 PAL widescreen in the Juicer?

Advance thanks to anyone who could enlight me.

Hi Clarke, Welcome to the DJ Forums...
After having discussed your queries with one of our Lead Tech Specialists...this is what he had to say.

with the Pixel Aspect ratio Settings:
You are on the right track the only additional step you need here is to manually interpret the animation exported from Juicer into Vegas...follow the steps shown in the attachment.
The current problem with Vegas is that it does not automatically detect pixel aspect ratio of QuickTime files like other applications (After Effects, Premiere or Final Cut Pro).

Field Render:
The field order depends on the editing hardware that your are using. In most editing hardware...PAL is set to Upper and NTSC is set to lower. But in a few cases like the classic Pinnacle DV 500 and some old Matrox based editing hardware prefer lower fields for PAL.
Please do give us details on your editing hardware and we will be glad to suggest the ideal field order.

For PAL Widescreen, is the ratio supposed to be 1.42 or 1.4568???
To keep things simple we have simplified the pixel aspect ratio values displayed in our interface just like all other editing applications (Premiere, Final Cut etc). The actual pixel actual aspect ratio exported by Juicer is 1.422 but the Vegas interface shows the values more precisely which should not make any difference on the scale of the animation.

Hope this helps and answer's your queries

Thanks nitinp
That's a piece of information I did not know about Vegas *learning everyday*

What I did was another way

The original problem as seen by me

And when I tried to fit the video to be same as output (a cropped view)

So I when to change the maintaining aspect ratio to "No" and Volia !!!

But I think DJ's solution is more logical

Thanks for the assistance!

Nitin's post shows you the "proper" way to do it, but if you like the look of the cropped method for a particular animation, by all means, use that!

The only caution is that since you aren't using the "proper" pixel aspect, elements in the animation will be squashed somewhat. As you can see in your example, the squashing isn't noticeable. It'll look odd with squashed perfect spheres and especially globes, however.

(Although it looks like Vegas isn't picking up the PAR flag anyhow, which is why you have to input it manually in Vegas, so I'm guessing the PAR setting in the Juicer doesn't matter at all as long as the frame size is 720x576.)

By PAR I'm assuming Pixel Aspect Ratio and not the golf term.

Thanks DEF

That's why I also agree nitinip's method is the better way.

I guess it is an issue from Vegas and not from the Juicer.
