Shaun!! You're my hero! That did fix it! That controls only the little preview screen, right? It won't affect final export quality? deb _____________________________ SouthPoint Foursquare Church Fresno, CA BlogMe (in reply to Shaun C. Roemich) |

Now, the next question... Sometimes I pull something out of a bin, and place it in the timeline, and it inserts itself (even on a completely empty track) and splits up everything on all other tracks. Well, actually, almost all the time it does this. It takes me a number of attempts to get something where I need it without making these splits. What's the secret there? deb _____________________________ SouthPoint Foursquare Church Fresno, CA BlogMe (in reply to mptribe) |

debc, Watch the cursor as you are placing the new element in the timeline. If he arrow points to the right, your are inserting and if it points down, you are overwriting. How do I choose which one? The timeline has a little line almost in the middle. Where you place the arrow toggles its state. Have fun! (in reply to debc) |

Deb: Yes, that only affects preview AS LONG AS you look at the bottom of the fly-out dialog and it says under Print to Tape "Use Full Quality" or whatever it says. And Jose is of course right with watching the cursor for Overwrite/Insert. Marc: Thanks. Been busy and away and then sick. Things are good. I'm 100% Hi Def now! (in reply to mediatvguy) |

Thank you Shaun! Jose ... I have seen the various arrows, but I didn't understand about when they did what and how to control them. Now that I've played with it a bit, I see it! Thank you so much for that! I'd have never figured it out! deb _____________________________ SouthPoint Foursquare Church Fresno, CA BlogMe (in reply to Shaun C. Roemich) |

Deb: Keep in mind what Jose and I are talking about here is the contextual cursor as you drag over your clip to the timeline and how it changes as you position it in the timeline and NOT the TOOLS that are shaped like arrows, which are Track Selection tools. Just to make things even more murky... If you need help with the Track Selection tools, just ask... (in reply to mediatvguy) |

Deb, I just had to jump in to say how awesome it is that you've 'jumped' right into Final Cut, are asking all the right questions! Have fun! Jen _____________________________ ~ Jen DJ Showcase Portfolio (in reply to Shaun C. Roemich) |

Shaun: Yup, the messages made sense when I dragged them down to see how the instructions looked in practice. To tell you the truth, I read the message here and was utterly lost, it just hadn't registered on me that there was a pattern or that the line in the middle meant anything. Now, as for the tools that are shaped like arrows ... I don't even know where or what those are. Jen ... thanks for the message, I was just thinking how completely cheeky I am for just opening up the software and expecting to be able to make it work. deb _____________________________ SouthPoint Foursquare Church Fresno, CA BlogMe (in reply to PIP) |

Its well worth memorizing keystrokes over using a mouse, as the mouse will slow you WAY down. All vital controls can be controlled by a keyboard, and, try remapping your keyboard to the way you like and save that layout. One neat trick inside FCP is when your using effects: if you go to your PREVIEW window and go to the filters tab, if you have a bunch of effects stacked on each other (also works with a single effect too) try holding down the option key and pressing F. This places a folder in your "Favorites" bin (in the effects tab on the browser) of your effects on your clips and saves the order in which they were stacked, keyframes, and specific settings. You can then apply this to any / all clips in any sequence or any project by dragging that folder onto a clip like you would an effect. I carry this trick a step farther in an upcoming DJ mag article on FCP so I won't spill the beans completely now. Try it. Its a good way to have a virtual "bag o' tricks" and save you time not having to rebuild what you've done already. (in reply to debc) |

Is there somewhere the keyboard shortcuts are listed? I admit to wishing for some already. deb _____________________________ SouthPoint Foursquare Church Fresno, CA BlogMe (in reply to Charlie Burket) |

Deb, Goto Tools --> Keyboard Layout. Step 1: Click the unlock button in the left corner. Step 2: Pick the tab that you want to modify. The "No Modifiers" tab is your standard, meaning, you don't need to hit any other key in addition to the one you want to assign in order for it to function properly. (EXAMPLE: The last tab, CTRL-SHIFT, means that you need to press control + shift and the key you assign to get FCP to perform the function you are mapping) Step 3: Browse the huge list or simply type in the search box what function you are looking for and when you find it, drag the function from the list over to the key you want to assign it to. Step 4: When you are done, either click back on the lock or "X" out of the keyboard layout window and this will take you back to your sequence editor. If you want to save your layout go back to TOOLS --> KEYBOARD LAYOUT --> and select SAVE LAYOUT. Then name it "DEB's Layout" or whatever and it will save it in a seperate preferences folder that you can either keep where it is or store it to a USB key and load it up wherever you use FCP. Better yet, you could email it to yourself and if you find you ever need it again, wherever you are in the world, you can install it and FCP will be familiar to you like your home machine. Thanks so much. While I'm tempted to redo some keys ... I'm thinking I should just leave it with the defaults. I'm going to check the manual(s) and see if I can just copy a page with shortcuts on it, too. Those things weigh enough, there should be shortcuts listed in there somewhere! deb _____________________________ SouthPoint Foursquare Church Fresno, CA BlogMe (in reply to Charlie Burket) |
