I am having a heck of a time (DJ support also couldn't help) trying to get a simple transition from Swipes or animatte to key properly on a Media Composer. I have imported every possible way. Anyone have the secret to the obvious? grecht |

First what Avid are you using? If you are using Composer or Express Pro you don't use a matte key for a swipe, you will just import the QT into the Avid and it will come in with an alpha channel. using a matte key with an animatte from one of the ETK's you would put the black and white animation on the layer above the video you want to key out or in and drop the matte key effect on it. Under the effect settings you can switch what keys in or out by the invert key setting. Rick (in reply to grecht) |

Thanks, Rick. It is a Media Composer. I have imported both alpha and inverted and no matter what I do, it doesn't key through. Is there a possible Avid setting stopping the key? grecht (in reply to media_explosion) |

There's some info on Avid codecs and use with Digital Juice stuff here... Suggested Avid Codec Selection There may be some clues in here as to what may be going wrong... not sure... ... perhaps the line at the very bottom that states "Versions prior to Media Composer® 8.x/Xpress® 2.x are not compatible with the DVD-ROM versions of Digital Juice animations"... if you're using the animations directly from the disc and your MC is prior to MC8.x, that could be it... I'm just guessing. Other interesting codec notes etc re Avid in there too... hope it helps. TK (in reply to grecht) |

start up the juicer, select which animations you want, then in the field order set it to progressive. Render them out, import them into avid with the invert alpha setting and everything should be good to go. (in reply to Creative Oil) |

Export from Juicer as a MOV (or save disk space with a PNG Sequence) and import with the Invert Alpha option selected on the Settings tab. If you use a PNG Sequence, import the first frame only (ends with _00000). Avid will take over from there. Just make sure that the right setting on the Setting screen is on. I think it's Autodetect Image Sequence. You shouldn't have to invert the alpha on just a single alpha Swipe. Also make sure that the Swipe's layer visibility is turned on. I know it sounds too elementary, but sometimes we miss the easy stuff. I just switched from XPress Pro to Media Composer and one of MC's little quirks is that it moves the layer visibility around on its own. XPress Pro didn't. _____________________________ Windows XP Media Center 2002 Pentium 4, 3GHz, 3GB RAM NVidia GeForce FX 5200 (256MB) Avid Media Composer 3, QT 7.5 After Effects CS4 (in reply to redsoxfan692) |

That's what I was saying, didn't even dawn on me about disk space as I've never had any issues with that. ;) Reason I said go to progressive setting on the .MOV output is because I noticed that when I left it at lower field first, MC would import it but it would be interlaced all to hell. I changed to progressive and never had a problem since. I've always used the juicer to do what I need to do, especially since it's easy to put basic masks and color changes to a clip in there and then fine tune it in avid. (in reply to jkhorton) |

Btw., there is a training segment available for using Double Alpha Swipes in Avid XPress Pro & Media Composer: Using Double Alpha Swipes in AVID Xpress Pro. When using Fullscreen Swipes (Single Alpha) you just skip the matte clip. _____________________________ Michael Lt. Cmdr.
