Should the juicer be split into two separate products one for video generally and one for Fonts ?

Most of the changes to the juicer recently have all been to do with Fonts. I find the main body of the juicer very stable but the fonts area very unstable and clunky, it feels like it is trying to work within the inteface of the juicer, when it should have more like the interface of Photoshop.

The workflow for fonts just is not instinctively right because it is still trying to work in the juicer workflow, which is a very different batch process workflow. Fonts are generally one for one editing much more like photoshop.

I'm sure this would make both products more stable as it would allow the developers to work on each area separately without the need to ensure fonts arn't impacting on the main body of the juicer. (I suspect this takes a lot oftime up in testing etc). The fonts element needs to develop a bit further in order to be a stable product which is reliable. The fonts look and are fantastic, but I have real trouble getting them out, with many crashes, layouts not saving etc, It takes a long time trying lots of options (and reboots) to get them output. If they did not look so great I would question whether the effort was worth it. For me this is very frustrating with many elements just not doing what they say they should do. (saving batch list and exporting for instance generally do not work) - which is the whole point....

It could also open up the door to allow the fonts element to exist within other packages such as Premiere and Photoshop as a plugin. I'd love to see more animation involved, the Mr Bingo tutorial for AE just brings the fonts to life so well, would love to see more of this. I'd pay quite a bit to see these additions and plugins in place.

Should the juicer be split ?
DJ please give this some consideration - Is the juicer helping or hindering the growth of the fonts product?

Mark

I've got to agree that the fonts and all of their associated innovations have played havoc with the juicer since they came out. Separating them from the primary juicer would certainly help ensure a more stable experience with the other products. And, as Mark pointed out, it could open up even more possibilities with the fonts in the future. Certainly worth considering if it isn't in the works already.

To be helpful we'd have to breakdown this thread in to very specific examples of crashes, version of juicer using, etc..

Separating the program out would not necessarily make it "more stable". It is essentially a completely separate part of the juicer and coded from ground up.

Workflow:

it feels like it is trying to work within the inteface of the juicer, when it should have more like the interface of Photoshop.

The workflow for fonts just is not instinctively right because it is still trying to work in the juicer workflow, which is a very different batch process workflow. Fonts are generally one for one editing much more like photoshop.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here. Are you saying the way that you get into DJ Fonts (via dragging a font into batch list and clicking settings) is a problem or once you get into DJ Fonts?

I'm not sure how we are constrained by Juicer's workflow other than getting into DJ Fonts and the area you render. Everything else from the way layers are handled, browsing, editing, etc are all ground up and "photoshop"-like.

Are you referring more to features that are not there like layering multiple font layers?

Stability:

To sort out stability on different systems it is helpful to know the version you are using and what is breaking and when.

I'm sorry it crashes for you or seems unstable but we'd love to figure it out and try to fix it. We test on many different systems and setups but don't catch everything. With specific examples (particularly repeatable crashes) we can generally fix it fast. (thanks for the specific of Saving Batch list.. we'll check)

We are in the process of redesigning the entire Juicer piece by piece to allow for some of the things you describe (using fonts as plugins in other apps) some day. There are small almost imperceptible changes with each revision due to a lot of changes we are making to the backend code of Juicer/Fonts/etc in preparation for Juicer 4.

Thanks for your inputs please if you run across specific bugs post them in the bug report area of the forums and I assure you we will look closely and try to fix quickly.

Thanks for the input DH, nice to see you alive and kicking and responding to issues. Fonts are obviously an area which you are passionate about, and quite rightly so as they as just so cool...

I've installed 3.59 on both main machine and laptop now. Stability has improved greatly, well done to all concerned.

Workflow does still feel weird.

Just thought I'd write down how I work when doing text for the video...

1) Start juicer and fonts
2) Select work area canvas size
3) Load background (which could either be a still or could be an animation from anywhere in the juicer)
4) Start placing text...
5) Choose font
6) Apply kerning, spacing, rottation, jumble etc
7) Currently can only have one font to text box - would like to place mutiple fonts on the same canvas
8) Apply animation to text (yes please)
9) Save to juicer file
10) Export to Photoshop or PNG (or video for animation)

With the current workflow I have to choose the font upfront, well before I have set the canvas and background. I find that I constantly have to rechoose the font at a later stage which is the wrong way around...

Don't get me wrong I love the fonts they are just fantastic. But I'm only using for title fonts in the videos at the moment, as it is too time consuming to create for general text.

Mark
