I am currently working on a project that is mostly 720 X 486 4:3 SD. This footage has a pixel aspect ratio of .9091. My project properties match my footage (720 X 486).

I now need to add some NTSC HDV footage (1440 X 1080) to this project. I need to know how to resize my HDV footage to match the 720 X 486 4:3 SD footage. I have tried changing the pan/crop of my HDV footage to a width of 1104.6 and a height of 1080.0 but this does not help when I render out to my 720 X 480 MPEG-2 DVD file.

When I play my DVD, the HDV footage extends outside of the 720 X 486 footage. For example, I have one scene that has 720 X 486 footage on top of my HDV footage. This creates a "border" of the underlying clip.

I think it's a pixel aspect ratio issue. This sounds like a calculation error that I need to solve. Any suggestions?

Oopsp!  I forgot to mention that I am using Sony Vegas 7.0 as my NLE.  Thanks.

There may be a better way but I would just right click on the HD footage and choose video event pan/crop. In the pan/crop window right click on the footage in this window and choose Match Output Aspect and the footage will be resized to the project settings. So if you're at 720x 480 that video event will be sized that way. This method will crop the video to some extent on the edges.

You could try adjusting the pixel aspect ratio on the HDV footage to match the project and then play with the pan/crop settings as needed. I'm sure D. Eric Franks will be along soon to offer specific advice, as mine may or may not work. I don't work in HD at all now so I haven't personally tried it. Good Luck.

I am going to look at it again later today.  Hopefully D. Eric Franks will be on here sometime this week to give some input as well.  Thanks guys for your responses.
