My FIRST attempt at getting into the DJ Font collection. I'm wondering if anyone has created a "vine" that wraps around text. What I want to do is take two letters, which stand for a company, and make it look like a vine is growing/wrapped around them. Possible?

If your thought is to output the font and then further modify it in photoshop or illustrator or something then I'd have to say yes -- it's possible. If you're asking if someone has a created a community font that does this I'll go with, no. I lack general 'artistic' skills and am unpracticed with illustrator but, if I had to do something like this I'd start with a font that already had some elements incorporated -- I forget the name but there is at least one that has leaves and vines elements. Output the letters you need, then bring them into either illustrator or photoshop to finish out. Before I tried to create a vine from scratch I'd see what elements I already have in my DJ collection -- juice drop Freshcrawl's vectors or elements in MDTK 1 would be my first stop but there are several places to look. Then I'd go about integrating those elements into the logo. _____________________________ Sam (in reply to VOPro) |

Sam is absolutely correct. You'd need to render the font and open in Photoshop (You might be able to do it in Illustrator, but I only have CS2 and feel Photoshop is way easier to use for rastered images such as the Mac-based PNG files output by DJFonts). Create a layer below the font and above the font. Place the vine you want to use as the wrap on the bottom layer). With the bottom layer active (click on the bottom layer in the LAYERS palette), use your tool of choice in Photoshop (I prefer the pen tool, but you might be able to use the lasso tool to trace the outside of the letters). Then create a new layer with the path active (looks like marching ants going around the selection), copy, click on the top most layer and paste on that layer the copy/selected area. Now you have vines "under" the font, and over the font, creating a 3-D effect. Depending on your situation, you may have to exactly trace the outside of the font... or loosely trace. Either way will work to achieve the 3-D look with a vine in the back of some areas, and a vine in the foreground of other areas. Hopefully, this overly simplified explanation gets you started. The trick really is to find a vine that has a similar look and feel. One of my earlier suggestions was that enhancement elements be created as a companion product to provide designers even more ways to customize their end use of the fonts. (Things like a vine that can be used... or a background that has the look and feel of some of the fills in the letters. Unfortunately, there just aren't enough designers who would buy such a product, so there likely will not be a market for the concept to sustain a profit. Plus, sadly, DJ's recently stated emphasis on the motion and video market tells me that still graphics will not be a major priority into the future, even though the files created for the video market gets the creations 90 percent of the way to where they could be offered as outstanding high res stills for print people, thereby promoting a whole new market for DJ). < Message edited by deano2222 -- 5/13/2010 8:42:57 AM > _____________________________ dean (in reply to AdrenalineMP) |
