For the benefit of the DJ users I am reporting on my expereince using Sorenson Squeeze 6 for Flash.

As crazy as it sounds, I have discovered that Sorenson Squeeze 6 for Flash (and probably the full Squeeze 6) does not encode f4v files.

In recent tech support communications with Sorenson Media, I was told that any mp4 utilizing aac audio encoding was equivalent. However when using Flash Catalyst, this did not work.

I reported this to Sorenson. The reply was to rename the outputed file with the .f4v extension. I tried this and it did not work in Flash Catalyst (It did work in the standard Flash program). Even more crazy, is the fact that Squeeze 6 has numerous mp4 presets for use in Flash. However, using these presets gave the same result. The presets were not altered in any way prior to encoding.

When I reported these results to Sorenson, they replied by saying that f4v was not a supported Squeeze format and to possibly contact Adobe instead.

For an expensive, and supposedly top end, encoding program, I think this is really negligent. Flash Catalyst, although not quite the user friendly alternative that Adobe claims, is a good alternative to Flash Professional and allows users to create sophisticated flash presentations without using code. I think it will be widely adobpted by the video production community.

I therefore cannot recommend Squeeze 6 in any capacity. All the more ironic since I purchased the "Squeeze 6 for Flash" version. It cannot encode the best quality Flash files! I am still in disbelief about this and totally disappointed with Sorenson, particularly regarding their lack of concern on the matter. Furthermore, other posts on the Squeeze 6 forum reveal similar disappointment with Squeeze 6 because of other features not available in Squeeze 6 which were available in earlier versions ( I am not sure, but Ithink that .f4v was available in past versions).

If you are considering Flash Catalyst (I do highly recommed this product) then do not waste your money on Sorenson. I am sure there are better alternatives. Flash Catalyst only accepts .flv and .f4v files.

Sounds like Catalyst needs to expand their choices. There is a list of formats right on Sorenson's website so there really isn't any reason to complain, should of done the reach before buying the product.

You are quite correct and I do take the blame.  Also suqeeze 6 is good at encoding mp4 files with multi-pass encoding capaboilities. So I give due where it belongs.

But I think you may be missing the point of my post.  I am not blaming Soenson for tricking me into purchase.  I am simply in disbelief that Squeeze 6 for Flash does not include .f4v encoding.  Part of  my purchase decision was a video I saw with Jan Osher using Squeeze. Pretty sure he outputted in f4v.  This may have been an older version.  It is my fault for not verifyuing that functions contained in an older version are not offered in the newer version. I would not have guessede this.

Additionally, Sorenson's tech support did tell me that the mp4 files would work and were the same as f4v.  Not true it appears.  They were pretty sure about this.  I do appreciate support for trying and am not blaming them for responding.  I guess what I kind of expected was for Sorenson to look into the issue and perhaps download a free copy of FC at Adobe's web site. Then duplicate my efforts, and prehaps look into the issue and maybe even communicate with Adobe on the issue in oder to provide a solution.  However, their best effort was just to tell me that they do not support .f4v.

So as it stands now, Squeeze 6 for Flash, cannot provide any better encoding for use with a Flash product than .flv. I only wished to pass this on to help prevent others from making the same mistake as I did.   But your point is well taken. You can't assume anyhting as I did.  I did indeed assume that "Squeeze 6 for Flash" would encode a very common Flash file that is is commonly provided by onboard encoders in even very inexpensive editing apps. and may appear to have been included in past versions of Squeeze.

I also indeed feel that for the price of Squeeze 6 for Flash, that all flash output formats should be included.

Regards.

Jeff
