As our wonderful forum continues to grow and become the place to be in web land, it is becoming harder to control erroneous posts on the forum. We have been receiving complaints that lots of unnecessary posts are hitting the forums and causing search returns to be more difficult to navigate. I ask everyone to keep the following in mind when posting:

If you need to add additional information to a post you have made, please go back and edit your original when possible to add information instead of making a new post. Especially to just add a single word.

Posting and then deleting has been increasing lately. This is in an effort to increase ones scores as posts that are deleted by the the poster are placed into a recycling bin and hence, post numbers remain. As of now, all deleted posts will be permantly deleted and post scores will be reduced.

In the next few months, you will see our forums grow even bigger with many new exciting things ahead of us. I ask everyone to help out in keeping this forum the best place to be. We dont want to loose any more regulars or new comers because of unruly posting.

Thanks

I promise to do a better job of this. I'm probably the worst with it.

Graham, I was also wondering, is there any way to have the NEWEST POSTS SINCE LAST VISIT option to show only the threads that have been active instead of every single post being reported?

I asked a couple of times, but didnt hear anything about it. But seeing a link to every single post since last on the site can get tiresome to sort out after a couple of pages and trying to remember if you already checked a certain thread or not. It has a tendency to report 3 or more pages of updates, but really out of that it can be cut down to a third of actual threads posted in. A lot easier to get it once, and just cycle back to the last thred you had seen and read from there.

Thanks English.  I didn't want to mention anyone by name but since you owned up to it, thanks.  don't get me wrong here.  We value everyones posts here, we really do, but we have some cool stuff coming and we want to make this the best video/print forum out there.

Remember, it's you guys that have made this what it is today.

I totally agree with Graham... I'm gonna do my best as well. Also I second JAson's motion to find a way to reduce the results in the 'new post since last visit' page.

Fully agreed, Graham. Let's keep this place useable.

Btw., the post rate of some members seem a bit strange lately. Don't wanna spill names here .

He already emptied the Recycling Bin... I only went down 9 posts... 4 of which were done intentionally as a joke.

David -
You may have a lot of posts but you should not feel guilty because I always see you as one of the first people jumping in to help out in almost every problem someone is having. Thanks for all you do!

Now get over to the this thread and help me out already...lol

True, we have a lot of posts lately on the forums, but Its not really the issue as much as just our silly posts. Like David said, sometimes its intentional just to the point of being silly, but for the most part, its all good. And Dan's correct, sometimes, some people just post more because they are on the forums more, and are reacting more to what is being posted. Usually in a helpful mode. So no reason to feel bad about that at all.

As for the issues that Graham stated in the beginning, I think that is well stated, and good enough for everyone to understand.

I will investigate the issue and see if it is possible to only include the threads vs all the posts.

Preference for "today's posts" and "posts since last visit" Threads only   All posts

To Threads only :)  This should make it easier to browse

I gave you an A so only one point, ant it was for the effort.

However this feature takes you to the beginning of the thread and if it is 3 pages long and has 10 new posts it is up to you to find out where they new posts begin. So is not a complete solution yet.

There is got to be a better way.

Well, there is that way and the other way.  You guys make up your mind!  If we make any hard-coded customizations, we will not be able to apply security and functionality updates when they are released.

Don't get defensive. Just double check to see if there is an option to do it that way. Sort of a combination of that way and this way.

I have never used the links at the bottom of the main forum page to find new posts since last visit. I always look for the flashing new post symbol, open the topic, then click on the 'go to first unread post' symbol next to the thread (green arrow & yellow/orange page symbol). Always works for me.

From an administrative point-of-view I don't think it would be a good idea to do a number of code customizations. As JP said the forum software will be virtually impossible to update (at least not without much effort to reapply the code changes).

I had my share of "fun" with an intranet forum software, to which I applied a number of modules to get what I wanted. Well, I marked each and every change ... but updating it gave me nightmares.

This forum is a 'canned' software..... It probably has some sort of 'Control Panel' where all this can be changed without affecting the ability to apply updates. C'mon guys...

Well Jose, be surprised, but if anything one can think of could be changed by a mouse click this would be an ideal world. But ..... it's usually not the case. That's just the reason why there are functionality updates and why people care to modify the code.

Jose, the only option is "Threads" or "Posts" - changing it to something in the middle would be a full code-level change that would basically "void the warranty and upgradability" on the forum.  Conversly we could create our own forum software from scratch, but it would take several months and not contain many of the advanced features which we enjoy (plus, moving the existing data would be a nightmare)

David has requested that we leave it set like the old way (posts) so that is how it will be.  :)

One think I have thought of is a custom page that I will create that will show "Threads modified since last visit" that will have the threads and link directly to the first post modified since last visit in the thread.  Only thing is that with current plans, it will be several weeks until we can implement.  Once it is ready I will add the link to the forum header.  Hopefully that will make everyone happy.

Something else that will be changed is subscriptions.  All current subscriptions will be wiped out.  Many users have complained of receiving lots of emails and don't want them.  This is probably due to a previous update that left the "Notify me via e-mail when someone replies" checkbox on the bottom of the post window checked by default.  I have since changed it so that box is unchecked by default.  I will clear all current subscriptions and then turn the subscription features back on.

Below I will post the ways you can "manage" your subscriptions to your preference.  If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

Under  "My Profile"

Subscription Preference Forum subscription preference
Notify me whenever a message is posted
Notify me only when a new topic is posted

Thread subscription preference
Notify me whenever a message is posted
Notify me once per thread until I visit the thread again
Notify me once per thread until I visit the thread again or until I visit the board the next time

Under "My Subscriptions"

subscribe or unsubscribe to any threads

"Bottom of post window"

Notify me via e-mail when someone replies

Ok, subscriptions have been cleared and the feature is available again.  If you do not want to receive emails, please set your preferences as described above.

Well, tnx for the effort on all of this JP. It can surely be taxing trying to keep up with everything on the forums, so tnx for all the hard work.

Too bad so far about the Posts vs. Threads though, as it really is a hinderance to have to cycle through the same threads continuously, but
nothing that cant be worked around on our end. Just a nice feature to have it as threads imo.

Tnx again.

Once the new threads viewer is ready, should give everyone what they are looking for.
