Utoh. I was in the middle of checking out with the awesome new Toxic Type for Apple Motion when I looked twice at the screen. It says Motion 4 and Motion 5.

Hmmm, what I have here is Motion 3 from our Final Cut Studio 2 box.

So I bailed out until I can find out if the Motion 4 templates will run on Motion 3 (somehow, I suspect they won't) - and what my options are from others caught in this craziness. Evidently there is no upgrade to Studio anymore, you just have to buy everything new.

So, Apple guys - what are my best options? Will Motion 4 work with my older Final Cut Pro? Do I just bag it all and move on to AE?

*sigh*

You can upgrade your FCS 2 to FCS 3 by calling Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for Part number MB642Z/A. This will give you all the updated programs including Motion 4 and FCP 7. I believe it is still being sold at the $299.00 upgrade price but I am not sure.

This info was shared at Larryjordan.biz and at MacRoumers.com.

Personally, I think it is a good deal since it will include FCP 7, Motion 4 Soundtrack Pro 2, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro and Color.

We would not recommend you trying to get it to work in Motion 3. If your system supports it, Motion 5 is very inexpensive purchase on the Apple App Store (i think like $49).

If that is not an option then I think I'd recommend the AE version instead.

Will Motion 5 co-exist with our Final Cut Pro Studio 2, which makes it FCP version 6.something?

Alan ... I called our Apple store on Thursday, and they told me there was NO upgrade path at all.

You should have seen my jaw hit the floor.

I even talked to the business/professional specialist, not any random person who answers the phone.

Are you talking about upgrading to FCS 3 or to FCP X. There is no upgrade (or is it cross-grade) to FCP X. All I have read is that Apple was still offering FCS 3 on that special number. It must mean that it is the FULL VERSION and not the upgrade which was $299.00.

I should consider myself lucky. I purchased a Mac Pro this year from B & H Photo in New York and also purchased the upgrade to my FCS 2 to FCS 3. I did that so I could use the Ready2Go for Motion from DJ.

My assumption was that the 800 number with Apple would apply to a FCS 3 upgrade as well. Obviously it does not, which is unfortunate.

I have downloaded the FCP X Trial and have experimented with it a bit and I can see some benefits to the new (I say NEW because it it totally new and approaches FCP in a different way) version. I have not purchased Motion 5 as of yet. Apple is taking a visionary approach to both programs and eventually with third-party add-ons and hooks I am sure they will eventually be accepted. The thing that bothers me the most is the way the introduction was handled. Apple shot itself in the foot for basically cutting loose hundreds if not thousands editors and motion artists with the wholesale introduction of a completely new and alien program. What it should have done was continue to support and offer FCP 7, FCP Server and FCS. There was no logical reason for them to, in essence, take a "take-it or leave-it" attitude with the FCP X introduction. There are editing houses and freelancers who have spent literally millions of dollars on a program which is considered to be one of the better editing units and depend on it for their living. Cutting them loose the way Apple did was a Customer Relations nightmare.

I am sorry to hear about the lack of an upgrade for you to FCS 3. I hope you can find someone who has one on a shelf and can sell you one. Perhaps you might call B & H, J & R, NewEgg and others to see if they can still offer you an upgrade box. They all have 800 numbers and won't cost you a dime to at least ask. Good luck with it.

I re-read this post and caught this. You need to call APPLE, not your local store. As I posted previously, you call Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for Part number MB642Z/A.

My understanding is that this is only directly through Apple and not the stores. Try it again and see if you have any luck.

With the FAR lower cost of the new Motion 5 than I'd have expected, I'm going to put that on a purchase request with the Toxic Type.

3 years ago, who would have *guessed* you could buy the brand new Motion all by itself for $49?!

Now, I wonder how fast I can get this approved!?  :)

And here's the REST of the story ...

Technology just keeps on costing, I swear :)

So I went to buy the new Motion 5 so that I could get Toxic Text ... and the App Store said "NO WAY - your graphics card isn't good enough."

This little $99 sale (thank you for leaving them on sale until I could get my technology sorted out, Dave) ended up with an extra $49 in software (a steal compared to I paid for Studio a few years ago) and $170 in a graphic card. We had to hunt all over to find a card that would work for the old MacPro with OpenCL that was under $300.

So, the graphic card is on order, My Toxic Type has been paid for, but not downloaded yet, and I'm going to have to wait for the graphic card to get installed to order the new Motion.

Hopefully I don't run into any further snags at the App Store :)

All in all, I've had much more expensive brushes with "catch-up-itis", and I think this will be a great bang for our bucks!

Do you already own Motion 4? If you do the Toxic Type works with both Motion 4 and Motion 5 (it comes with links to downloads for both versions). I had already owned FinalCut Studio 3 so I had Motion 4. I have downloaded the trial version of FCP X and am impressed so far. It has some limitations, but some really cool features which use Motion 5 as the springboard for custom animations which are readily imported in FCP X. My MacPro is the most recent model so the graphics card works fine.

No, we just had Studio 2, Alan, so it was Motion 3.  The new Apple pricing makes an upgrade to Final Cut X a possibility if I ask for it in next year's budget, maybe. I had NO idea prices had dropped like this.

Although I have yet to find anything my old FCP can't do, and this would make it 2 versions behind. I'm pretty sure I'll be the least appreciated person on staff if I ask for an upgrade to anything else this year now, though. :)

Did you call that 800 number to see about upgrading to FCS 3 which has Motion 4, FCP 7, etc.? I have been happy with FCP 7 and the other items. As I said, I downloaded FCP X Trial and find it has some plusses to it and Third Party developers have come out with several awesome plug-ins and enhancements. I don't know how well you know Motion, but Mark Spencer (www.applemotion.net) has some fantastic training on how Motion 5 makes FCP X all the more powerful. Check it out. The integration of projects you develop in Motion 5 can be published and used directly in FCP X. the new X is totally different in the approach to editing video. I come from a graphic design background and the whole layer method in FCP was very natural. FCP X approaches things differently but more intuitively once you play with it. It might be worth downloading the trial and playing with it for 30 days before you purchase it. I have not yet done so but might eventually. It is hard doing it because I have invested pretty heavily in plug-ins, etc. for my FCS. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Naw, I didn't call ... because I'm not going to be able to shake loose that much money right now to do a complete upgrade anyway. So I'm going to get past the next couple weeks worth of projects and then look at FCX vs the upgrade to FCS3.

We need a few more acronyms!

Let me jump straight to the chase:

There is an option to open Apples own stock Motion 5 templates as a Project.

Is there a way to open the Toxic Type TEMPLATES as a PROJECT file in Motion 5?

Thanks.
