I just LOVE all the new Digital Juice child-friendly products. I am so glad to see you are now catering to non-professionals like us stay at home moms, and their children.

Your CANVASES products are so cute and adorable. I am looking at getting your new "Party and Celebration" canvases for my 9 year old. She is so good with paint shop software and likes making her own birthday party invitations. These would be perfect for that. What children wouldn't love the bright colors and balloons?

I can see where some of your other newer products would also be wonderful for bake sale flyers and PTA meeting announcements. I am going to tell all the other mothers about them.

I had visited this website a few times in the past but back then the products looked like they were mainly for professionals. I am so happy to see you are starting to emphasize us amateurs and crafters with your newer products.

I hope we see even more products with ribbons, lace, and hearts in the future. So cute!

Nicely said Mary (and welcome to the forums). I agree that the Canvases are very nice, BUT, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my hope that the Canvases will one day be released in layered formats so that elements can be lifted from one file and used in another. THAT would make them a pro-level product as well. Having them flattened is good, but having them layered in a ProSeries offering would be even better for high end usage too.

Having these for easy use is great. Having them in layered format would be much better for us pro-level users. (I usually can grab one of these and use them on the fly, but having to cut out an element to use in something else really takes time and slows me down. I'd much prefer to pop in a layered file and grab that layer... or snag a texture and use it alone.) There has been talk of a layered file release, but nothing released to date.

Yes with the new direction DJ seems to be going I was thinking about changing my wardrobe to a more pink color and getting my ear pierced too. Now is it left or right? I forgot.

LOL. Yes, perhaps a new wardrobe is in order. Just to clarify, I do like Canvases, BUT -- as a colleague pointed out privately to me -- the prospect of using one intact for a high-end client, only to see the exact art used for the background of a neighborhood bake sale is a bit troubling and underscores the legit need to have these things layered for real pro-applications. They are already mastered in layers (needed for the animated versions), so the work is already there, just get them in a boxed set and sell them to us pros again for even more money! As I had mentioned in another thread, perhaps some consideration can be given to those who purchased the original release so that we can have the layered discs. I do have to say that DJ became famous for PRO-use of their products. I sincerely hope that professionals are still the focus, but wonder if only flat art will be the subject of future offerings to the graphic designers of the world. I certainly hope that is not the case.

Yes exactly dean, you've hit it on the head. As soon as I read the first msg in this thread I thought "Oh my." Not that I'm against bake sale newsletters or the folks that make them, but there's a line where serious professionals have to make money with this stuff. Dean, you've identified, for this product, where the line is and what differentiates pro -vs- consumer.

Although I have been a Digital Juice customer for many years now, I have never felt compelled to take part in a Forum discussion until now. However, upon seeing the accolades recently given to Digital Juice for coming out with "child-friendly" products for homemaker activities, and reading how the word was going to be spread to many other homemakers to buy these new graphics, I felt like I had to add my two cents to the discussion. To me, DJ products have always been something very "special" -- brilliant and unusual graphics that have always been remarkably different from the average print graphics out there. Although I realize that DJ needs to make a profit, I personally think that appealing to the average consumer rather than the graphics professional is a huge mistake. As Dean pointed out so eloquently above, would we seriously want to use a background graphic for a professional newsletter, only to see the exact same background used in a handout made up by local babysitters or sewing clubs?? Such a case would be embarrassing for both the designer and the client, and would certainly "cheapen" the product. If, for example, DJ canvases were used for every kiddie newsletter and handout in town, they would quickly become worthless to professionals.

Personally, I would hate to see this wonderful company be pigeonholed into the same category with some of the other popular clip art packages that are mediocre at best. DJ products are incredibly unique, and the company should attempt to maintain that reputation and status at all costs.

What's the solution? Well, as Dean noted above, layered versions would make all the difference in the world. At least then the pro would be able to adapt the graphics to suit his or her particular project, and the finished result would likely differ so much that it might not even be recognizable as the same basic product.

Just the humble opinion of one of DJ's biggest fans...

Layered sets aren't easy to download but a dozen jpeg files for $39 is. It's amazing what a little mix and match of  the old layered Juice drops can produce.   I hope their present direction isn't a sign of the direction they're headed. If so there's a ton of cheaper jpeg sets out there ( that don't have a viewer app either - Oh Juicer 4 where art thou? )  to choose from.

Interesting discussion ... but from the perspective of this decidedly non-professional, there seems to be two issues at the heart of it.

The desire for layered versions is understandable and the reasons/advantages are well known. No arguments there ...

But to say that DJ should overlook the amateur/hobbyist (or "amateur") market is shortsighted at best, particularly in an environment where no company can afford to throw away potential customers. It shouldn't be the tools that define a professional (or a professional product), but the skills/expertise by which those tools are used. In a head-to-head comparison using the exact same backgrounds, the professional designer should be able to run circles around the bake sale/newsletter crowd. Font choices, coloring, spacing, layout ... they all contribute to the overall product. It's the expertise that a professional is paid for ... not his collection of backgrounds and clipart.

You can give me a slab of marble and a chisel, but don't expect Michelangelo's David in return. In fact, I believe the block of marble from which David was sculpted was actually rejected by other sculptors because of its imperfections.

Let DJ do was it does best -- provide "brilliant and unusual graphics that have always been remarkably different from the average print graphics out there." A true professional's work should always be able to speak for itself.

First of all, WELCOME JILLSTER to the forums. So nice to see you here. Your post was nicely said. And Mary, we are not pickin' on you cause we feel you have every right to use the files however you desire and we welcome your use of them 'cause the are very cool. That isn't the issue. The issue is a step beyond.

I do believe there is a place for the flattened graphics. No arguments. And I do agree with Jason (tripod) that a true pro can make them sing. BUT, think of the possibilities if we could simply tuck text under the tree branch in a foreground... or instead of the tree branches in the shot, we could click off the layer and use just the blue sky with the billowing white clouds... or grab a texture... or use just the heart form a layered file without spending the time to trim it out. Yeah, I know a real professional can do it and make things work, but it's about the time you need to invest to make it happen.

I really would expect a Pro-Level Service like DJ to offer Pro-Tools to, well, pros. I know there was discussion somewhere that Canvases might well be released as layered files one day. Hey, that day is here. Forget all the sizes and orientations, just gimme a big square file and I can shape it how I need it... or grab a few elements as I now do with Juice Drops. And no need to give us millions of layers where every leaf is a layer... Combine the whole branch or the entire layer of the tree. Hey, it's mo money for DJ. And the layered files already exist! The only work is to produce the discs. Surely, there will be enough willing pros to snap up the offering to make it worth while.

PLEASE. The time has come to release those puppies as layered files in a Pro-Series Collection for Pros that can really use them as only pros can. I will be the first to commit to purchase the darn things. Just gimme credit for already buying the flattened art files. The Canvases line represent very, very cool products... but there's so much more we could do with them as layered products. Call them Pro-Series Canvases... and do not worry about paying me for the rights to use the name Pro-Series. Well... maybe a free set of discs. That'll do it. : )

Come on... whatdoyasay?

Perhaps what we really want is another JuiceDrops collection (or 2). Perhaps start with one called seasons... holidays... etc.

I really only mentioned this because all the companies that I have bought this sort of stuff from in the past have all gone out of business.

So when I saw that Digital Juice had changed their focus and started selling this cute clipart for people like me, it was like finding the kind of clipart I haven't been able to get in over 10 years.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I or one of the other mothers at my daughter's school have needed some cheap basic clipart for a flea market flyer, or a party. So really, I am glad Digital Juice is starting to focus on buyers like us.

I don't think it would be any big deal if someone ends up using the same clipart that someone else is using for a bake sale poster. It's really just some graphics, and most people probably don't pay all that much attention to the graphics, they are just for background anyway.

One of the mothers in my sewing circle is interested in buying some of this clipart and making invitations for others using it (for pay). So I think this could be a nice way for stay at home moms to make some extra spending money. If a person can take this clipart and make an invitation and get paid $5 for it while their baby is napping, that would be wonderful.

The only suggestion I have is that I would like to see the prices be cheaper. Also, I looked all over the website and there is no telephone number. Just a "fax" number. This is the first business website I have ever seen that does not have a telephone number anywhere on it. I can understand they might not want to be bothered by customers, but they don't seem too bothered to take their credit cards.

I had to chuckle when I saw this. A package of 40 variations of Canvases at $39 is a steal. A few years ago, we JuiceHeads were paying HUNDREDS of dollars for DJ's offerings... I think I am at -- or getting close to -- the $10,000 mark from my first purchase. At $39, it doesn't get any better then that... unless you buy one get one free as they are offering right now. (Yep, THAT'S a real deal!!!) I've never really thought of DJ products as clipart, but -- instead -- resources. But you are right in your observation. If it is just a flat piece of art, then maybe it is just clipart. The Pro-Series would elevate the product to something way more than clipart.

You mean the Pro-Bake Sale Series? While some may not spot it others will pick out a duplicate or part of a series used in another place. Imagine some customer sees part of the graphics he paid for in a less expensive setting?  Might affect that next job. People shop for strange reasons.

I do understand the point here very clearly & do pretty much agree... but in knowing this I make sure I change up the products enough so they become one of a kind... :)
with that said I just wonder if you have really looked though your juice drops because alot of the canvases are made with product from them, so you are able to add elements without have to extract them from the canvases... hope that helps some...
but also know I so am hoping for the future to bring some layer work into the downloadables... I don't mind if it's only 3 to 4 layers or whatever works best for download times but just having some new stuff is always wonderful... :)
