Lots of discussion recently about the forums and its direction. Lots of plans for the future but I wanna hear from you. Yes, you!!!! What do ya wanna see in the forums? What don't you want in the forums? (Loaded question I know) I'm gonna leave this wide open and "NO DELETIONS" unless for obvious reasons it requires deleting.

To get things started here are a few I have received via chats and emails:

"Please control the hi-jacking"
"More battles"
"More how to's and tutorials"
"An Ask Dave Thread"
"Themed Chat nights"
"Post contests" - I guess some of you liked the one off post contest I did a few weeks back?

Update:
Some additional sent via email....

Blue is hard is too contrasty and make reading white text hard to read.
Change the smileys

Thanks

Forgive a beginner's question, but is it possible to have one thread where hijacking is allowed, without messing up the other threads or getting people upset? Don't mean to screw up the site, but I like seeing where free flow of thought can take a thread. Keep's me here daily instead of weekly, but if it can't be, that's cool too. Just hoping there can be a small corner left for fun.

At one time I created a thread titled "Please HiJack This Thread". It got very little use. The problem is that users have a thought and want to type it right now, not go look for a particular thread. They also may be responding to something that was said in the thread that will cause it to deviate from the original topic so if they post in another thread the flow of their hijack may be lost.

I don't particulary like hijacked threads but I think they are inevitable and they can add to the flavor of a board. Yes, they can get ut of hand, but if you try to eliminate them altogether, you will alienate the board members.

I know for one if it is too confining and people are given to strict of rules they will leave. I believe there needs to be control but it is an online community that needs to have outlets for people to get to know each other, rib each other, have a good time getting to know each other.

There needs to be areas (like the off topic area) that should be free to post anything and everything without having a thread closed because it was not going anywhere.

Does it really matter that it was not going anywhere? if people are having a good time and hanging around the boards posting advice and helping others in other areas of the forums, shouldn't they be allowed to let their hair down without getting told they are not contributing anything with that particular thread.
They are building relationships with their fellow Juicers and that should be a vital aspect for growth of any online community.

My point is if this board gets to serious that I have to be cautious that whatever I am posting will be judge worthwhile or not, then I would probably not hang around to long.

I have hung around the boards for close to a year and never really got involved until the past month or so and feel like I know alot of you already and feel a sense of community here. I would hate to see people leave because it was not a good experience for them anymore. (not that I am planning on leaving or anything)

Control the areas that need control but I think you need have to have an area that friends can let their hair down and just hang out.

Points for a really great post!

Why not create a forum where we can battle eachother for fun? A Group forum or something and make it so that it doesn't add to our post count or anything. Just a place where we can have fun.

I like the Ask Dave thread idea.

I would like to see a forum that focuses on Starting a Small Business. A place where we can seek, help and find info about Small Business.

As for the look of the site, I like the White Text on Dark Blue... but maybe there could be an option/preference to make the site the reverse way.

As for the Smilies, I like the Juice theme that DH was showing off. My biggest thing is to make them more recognizable. I don't use most of them because I'm not sure if I'm sticking out a tongue or what.

As for the Hijacking, I think the only way to weed it out is to use nested threads.

I agree with the comments on the hijacking of threads. I don't think that some hijacking is bad if it is related to the topic thread. When you go from "how do I do..." to "my favorite movie is..." in the same thread, it is problematic.

More tutorials and examples, not only by DJ but by the members. I would also like to see an area where we can post either a clip or an image and ask for suggestions on how to improve it. I know the showcase area does that to a point for video, but the type area is not conducive to longer discussions about the clip.

Someone had mentioned posting a clip / image and having an explanation on how it was constructed. That is a good idea.

How about an area called "learn from my mistake" where we can post problems that we have had with shoots, editing, using DJ products, etc. so we can all learn from our mistakes.

i have found that a good way to keep 'hijacking' at a minimum is to create specific theme threads. say under the 'off topic' forum you create threads for movies, books, TV etc...then people will usually post in the correct thread.

Yeah, extreme hijacking is a real PITA.

Oh btw., I have to thank Dave S. for abusing my thread The Final Frontier and getting it locked .

Mike, its back up.  Enjoy everyone.

Let's all not get tunnel vision on Hi-jacking though.  Yeah, sure it's gonna happen and for the most times, it's all fine and interesting, but forum management is always gonna be around and some threads will get moved.  It's a forum fact.  When I recieve a ton of complaints about wild posting then it will be looked at.

However, I'll say this again, posting the old Mac v's PC argument in a thread where a new juicer has come in to say Hi and we welcome him is NOT on and will be moved.

But that aside, im really interested in what new area's, features, idea's you have for the forums.  I"m getting some really great posts and emails on this.  Thanks to you all.

I guess the best thing I can suggest, is a longer time before I get "timed out". When I try to write a serious post, I try to think while I write, PLUS I'm lousy at typing so it takes me a while. I just lost three paragraphs of Pulitzer Prize material 'cause I was timed out. Tried to rehash it and remember what I wrote (tough at my age) but that got timed out.

So, I guess all I should say about the forum is "Live Long and Prosper"!

(hope that was quick enough)

Wizard, I've had the time out thing happen to me a lot. My work around is after I type the post, I select it all and copy it, then if I do get the timed out message I can just paste it in and post. Not ideal, but it works.

"More how to's and tutorials"

Hi Graham,

Will be for DJ products, or for the Forums section? Unless I'm missing it, there doesn't seem to be a section of "How to's" for doing things in the Forums. There are a few submitted tutorials scattered here and there, but nothing in an FAQ section or anything. I would like to see things like posting images for the battles, etc. in an area where we know we can find the answers.

Hope that makes sense.

I would participate in:
tut section (photoshop)
contests (printed related as i dont speak video)
JD battles - informal or otherwise
JD web templates?

I would like to see:
tool tips for forum/chat smileys
specific 'how they did that' articles from the JD masters (this might be there already and maybe i cant find what i am talking about)

A round of applause for:
The forum and chat system work extremely well on a mac
the freebie download section

One note on the timeout thing, I only get that once in a while on my MAC, but not on the PC. I use FireFox for both. But, I havent seen the time out deal until just recently, this past week maybe. Before that I never had that issue.

On forums adds, I dont have anything that wasnt already mentioned.

the time out happens to me all the time
what I do is copy the text before I hit post if it is a long post or one I spent a lot of thought on and if it doesn't go though I hit refresh then paste what I copied

Another trick is if you do get a time out message, right click on the timeout window and select "Back" from the drop down menu and resubmit. I used to do the ol copy just in case trick but found that this works just as well and quicker. The time out window won't have a back button so you have to use the right click trick.

Yet another idea: Have battles, but one of the requirements is that you also explain how you made the image/video. This allows for growth amongst the members while people still challenge one another to improve!

Also, how about a seperate video area(kinda like deredain said) where anyone can post their video for suggestions but it doesn't go into the main "Video Showcase" area. That way the Video Showcase can be for people's finished products, almost an online reel, while the other area allows for comments on works in progress! Once again, growth as a community. :-)

At this rate, in ten more years, I'll be an overnight success!

The one thing with the seperate video thing is bandwidth. If everyone started posting up everything they had, not saying they will, but hypothetically speaking, then DJ would be eventually hit with a huge bandwidth spike. Maybe that isnt a concern as bandwidth is more than plentiful?? Maybe not, but I find the easiest way for me is to host something like that myself, and then link to it. That way, the bandwidth from this site isnt even an issue.

Just a thought.

Well, in that case I have to thank you, too.

The last quoting parade was a bit weird - but the thread is up again so never mind.
