I know that there are not a lot of Avidites or Avidians on here but I think it would be beneficial to know what systems we are dealing with.

I am currently on an Xpress Pro HD with Mojo version 5.1.6.  We also have an Adrenaline here that uses Juice from time to time but 98% of the time it is my computer that gets the Juice.

So, I guess I'll be next.

I'm using Avid XPress Pro 4.6.5 on PC. I'll upgrade to AXP HD as soon as I have a more powerful computer. AXP HD has some nice features I'd like to have. But that has to wait for the moment. Yeah, I need more power (R...r..r..r..rrrr).

Doesn't look like many of us here.  I've been immersed since January '06 with my Avid Xpress Pro HD (v5.2.1) with Mojo powerpack bundle on a 3.4 Ghz, 2GB, HP-8200.  I'm very glad I didn't mess around and I got the best.

Welcome to the very exclusive club of Avid Juicers . At the moment there are not many regulars using Avid around here besides Fred and me. So good to have you around.

Hey Rich,

Glad to have you aboard.  I read your bio in the "Where are you from" thread and you seem to be fairly new to the editing world.  If you have any questions or problems feel free to ask and either Mike or myself will do our best to help out.

   Nice system by the way.

Fred,

I have only been editing with Avid since January.  I tend to jump in with two feet, read a lot, leatrn something new every day, find others having the same problems and learn from those posts.  I don't post much.  But now I'm having trouble with the lack of XML files on these new JD's so I'm back here reading again.  Yes I will take you up on your offer when I get really stuck AND in a panic state because of a looming project deadline. Thanks for being there.

Does DJ always send out these tempting email offers for stuff I didn't need yesterday but gotta have today at these LOW prices?  When will it ever end?

Rich

The insanity set in Dave a few months back and Viv has been unable to find a good Psychiatrist to bring him back to the evil corporate big bad owner side.

They do tend to offer a lot of great deals and many times they do seem to good to be true.  I, though, never get to partake in any of them because I do not control any purchasing unlike many of the Juicers on here.  I wish I had twice as much as I do.

As far as the JD's go...I pretty much don't even mess with them in my Avid.  Rather I do all my work in AE.  The controls are so much smoother and the ability to manipulate each layer is incredible.  If you do not have AE (and I don't see it in your signature) I highly recommend it.  A large portion of my work is done in AE and only finished in Avid.

Fred:

"lense lust" for photgraphers - what's it called for editors?  NO to AE - I'm having enough "lust" for new DJ products.  I went to bed last night asking myself how I was going to get JD layers into my AVID.  I read your last post above first thing this morning and it triggered a thought that AVID must be able to do this without having to mess with PS2. Sure enough, page 335-336 of Steve Hullfish's "AXP Editing Workshop" book lays it out in two steps: set Import to "invert existing" alpha and then import PSD files either as one flattened layer, a sequence of layers, or a sequance of chosen layers.

And all of this was inspired by your last post.  Thanks, Fred!

Bartlett, TN - just north of Cordova where my "new" 46-year-old sister lives who I just found out about 4 years ago.  Changed my life for the positive! Very nice area.  We may have to have lunch next time I'm visiting her and her family.

Rich

I moved six miles up Germantown road from Cordova three years ago.  She may have been my neighbor..

I have brought JD's in to Avid before but didn't care much for the control of it.  I also am trying to get a handle on PS so what better way than with DJ JD's.

Hi ,
I’m relatively new to AVID (2 years) and Jumpbacks (3-4 years) but have been editing analogue and digital video for about 18 years.
Brand new to the DJ forum. Came here today to find optimal Juicer settings for AVID import.

I’ve previously used the ANIMATION setting, but recently use of the AVID DV codec dawned on me. You can render using it from AE or Flash - send the codec to another animator/illustrator and they can render to it. Using the codec addresses and constraigns a number of format issues and there is near zero import time into AVID, and the file size is much smaller than an ANIMATION codec counterpart - Added bonus - the illustrators and animators can preview their work very closely to the way the AVID will see it.

Anyway - it has worked well rendering from AE and FLASH, but I’ve yet to find the Holy Grail of settings in the Juicer.
Any feedback would be appreciated

System:
Mac OSX
Ver 10.4.3
Dual 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4
2 GB RAM (DDR SDRAM)

AVID Xpress Pro V. 4.6.4 (Mac)
AE 5.5
PS CS2

JB 14
ETK 1,2

Thanks Again

Hey Norm, welcome to the best little on-line community this side of Heaven.

Here are the settings that I use for exporting from the Juicer:

Settings tab:

Field: Lower (even)
Resolution: 720 x 486
FPS: 29.97

Output tab:

Save As: Quicktime
Video Codec: Animation

    Under Settings:

    Compression: Animation
    Depth: Millions of Colors +
    Quality: Best
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Filter: Width 720 Height 486

Here are my settings for import into Avid:

Aspect Ratio: 601/709, non-square
Color Levels: RGB
File Field Order: Even (Lower Field First)
Alpha: Invert Existing - importing something with an alpha.
Ignore - Importing a background or Jumpback

These have worked well for me.  Hope that helps.

Yeah but maybe they can learn about the new "real" Avid product - Liquid which is making some serious waves in the video world.

Welcome Crea8tive.

Liquid made some waves before. And I'm sure that Avid will incorporate parts of Liquid techology into the MC product line if it would be advantageous - as these products are their main cash cows, and sure will remain that way for quite some time.

I believe you're right about Liquid makins some "waves." The people from Fast in Germany are still developing Liquid. One of the great things is that there are people producing commercials and TV shows using Liquid. The hardware is different than the Pro but the software is basically the same. The Background Rendering and InstantSave (never lose anything) are 2 features that might make their way into other products. Also Studio, which retained the Pinnacle name, is probably the new "cash cow" just because of the incredible volume of units they sell.

Studio might sell in higher volumes - as usual for consumer products - but I doubt it could be classified as cash cows. Don't forget that the professionally used products - i.e. MediaComposer, Symphony and DS - involve maintenance contracts and alike.

I work for a Television station in NW Arkansas. We use Avid Xpress Pro HD w/ Mojo. We have 2 studio kits with Avid FX, 3D, & DVD. We're still using one older Avid Xpress. We have purchased quite a bit of Juice here at the station as well.

I personally own Avid Xpress Pro HD at home. I was introduced to AVID & Juice by a college friend a couple years ago, and have been hooked ever since.

Thanks for the Welcome!

"Just curious, where in Ark. are you?  I am in Memphis and my co-worker next door is from Heber Springs."

I am located in Ft Smith, Arkansas. Our TV demographic area reaches from Mena all the way north to Bella Vista, so I am pretty much in the middle. I've never been to Memphis, although we've got a sister station located there. Thanks again for the welcome!

Hey all,  I am using Avid Liquid 7.1 sp1.  I also use Ultra2 and Particleillusion (free version).  I am very happy with Liquid because I can go from start to finish and not leave the package..... but I have found that Ultra2 is a great boost in productivity.  The Chroma key is so good and very, very forgiving.  Liquid does a good job but I needed to make sure the light was good and no hot spots etc.  Ultra2 does care.... hot spots, wrinkles, shadows, it just eats um up!

I am trying to learn Boris Red but at the moment I am having trouble getting motivated.  I just do it in Liquid and move on.  Any others using Boris Red?

I never learned to use Boris.  One of our former editors did but I used AE instead.

Hey all.  I'm an Avid editor currently using an older Xpress Meridien v6.1, Xpress Pro v5.6.3, and Media Composer Adrenaline v2.6.3.  Been using digital juice products since March of 2005 and have since accumulated a sizable collection.  All VideoTraxx; Jumpbacks 1-8, 14-16, 23 & 30; Editors Toolkits 1, 2, 6; and Revealers 1; LineItems 7; Slates and Bars 9 and Juicedrops 47.  I also use After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

I know that this is an old thread, but I thought I would throw in my $0.02 to say that I'm an Avid Liquid user -- essentially a hobbiast, not a professional editor.  I upgraded this past summer from Pinnacle Studio 9 because I simply outgrew Studio & needed more flexibility and functionality.  Hopefully, as Avid makes Liquid more & more their own (having acquired it about a year ago or so from Pinnacle), it will become even better.  I look forward to Avid Liquid 8!
