Score I could deal with but don't zero out my posts.  In some small way it shows a seniority and people give a little more creibility to those with high scores.  Not that it is always deserved.  Zeroing out the posts would just set the forums up for a race to get to this number and that number instead of useful questions and answers.  We went through the posts race a month or so ago and it got old real fast.

I don;t really think that zeroing posts is going to happen and it would be a shame if it did.  But getting rid of the scores would be fine.  People score posts for some of the worst reasons and it gets a bit absurd.  I say allow the posts to be scored without accumulating a number.  Or make tuhe rating of posts almost like the Showcase with stars versus letters.  Not every posts will be or needs to be rated but there will be those that really stand out as having great information or completely obnoxious that will get rated.

Just some quick thoughts.

Fred, I'm not going to eliminate any post numbers for sure. I agree with you regarding the number of posts does help to build credibility. The points system might go away as it does seem to be used for the wrong reasons a lot of the time.

I'm going to make the changes this week. I'll post details of what the new system will be soon. I still need to chat with Matt about a few things. Also looking at doing something with DJ chat this week too.

I think we need to be able to see who leaves the rating. That way, there's some accountability.

That has been suggested in the showcase as well and has never surfaced.  Jen, nothing against the scores themselves (I think most of your 61 is deserved thanks to your PS knowledge) but they tend to get used for fun rather than for effectiveness.  Nothing srong with fun.  Once we started using them, back when the forums were still small, we did have some fun with the scores.  But there is a lot more information coming out in the forums these days and I think the scores could be used better or gotten rid of.

Better - Maybe only admin. and moderators have access to the scores and they rate posts in their areas.  Do away with the negative scores and use the star system instead of the letters.  This way the scores are an indication of important information instead of a game to see how low Martyr's score can get.
I do think there have been some very appropriate scores given for both positive and negative posts but more aften than not it has been a posts free-for-all.

Gotten rid of - Would not bother me at all.  My first year on the forum nobody ever scored posts.  Then one day Matt or MikeM or someone rated a post and it was like "Wow!  Where did that A+ come from?"  and the flood gates were opened.  But had they never been used at all it wouldn't bother me.

Graham, glad to hear you and Matt have plans for changes to the forum.  I know people fuss about the policing but the forums have exploded with the sales this summer and that has been great.  But with that growth comes the need for a watchful eye and a need to keep things going in the right direction.

looking forward to the changes that you guys will install.

I agree with you, Fred. Back in those days when no scores were available or at least used we already found this forums to be a great place. I don't know exactly anymore but maybe I was one of the first guys to rate a post. With some exceptions quite a number of points were given just for fun since then. Maybe Freds proposal that moderators and admins rate the posts could help to keep things clean.

And I'm looking forward to the forum changes, Graham - whatever those might be.

I've thought about this and feel that anyone should be able to give points to anyone.

If you post something that really helps me out, I should be able to give you points. I shouldn't have to ask Graham to do it.

I guess for me it's either Free-To-Give Points or No Points!

PS - The negative points should go

Don't disagree at all MrE.  I too like to rate a helpful post.  But as of late it has gotten out of hand and I just stopped.  The scores seemed pointless - pun intended.

I personally don't care how they're used, or if they're used, but it would help if there was a set of rules/guidelines/suggestions posted somewhere. We can't all be expected to know the "rules of the game" unless we have a chance to see them first.

Correct.  You pretty much have to click on an old post or just check your score when you post up a new one.

As you may or may not have seen, I have today made some changes to the forum. Here is a run down so you all know what has happened up to now...

Post ratings will now be handled by admins and forum moderators. Points will be awarded from now on for helpful, meaningful posts that help out users the the forum.

Forum rankings have changed. They are as follows:

1 ball = <=10 posts and <=5 points - Ranking will be "Level 1 Juicer"
2 balls = <=100 posts and <=20 points - Ranking will be "Level 2 Juicer"
3 balls = <= 500 posts and <=50 Points - Ranking will be "Level 3 Juicer"
4 balls = <= 1000 posts and <=75 Points - Ranking will be "Advanced Juicer"
5 balls = <= 2000 posts and <=100 Points - Ranking will be "Supreme Juicer"

I'm going to try and get a forum recognition program going that rewards posters for going above and beyond. i'm not sure how that will work out yet, but if i can, im going to make it happen.

I'll keep you all posted as more changes happen.

Graham, I like all of your changes except for the title of Forum Champion.  That one just seems a bit odd to me.  Only my opinion.

Question:  Moderators can only give points within their own topic or throughout the forum?

I personally will always be a Groupie no matter what title is chosen.  Super Juicer was always fine with me.  But, since it is the ultimate achievement in the current set-up why not place a poll of five or so top level title for the members to vote on.

Forum Champion   -   Super Juicer   -    Juice Guru   -   Juice Fanatic   -   Supreme Juicer   -   Champion Juicer   -   Juice Smoothies   -   Top-Notch Juicer

Or you could just stay with Forum Champion since you do have to survive a lot to get to that point.
