Audio Postprodution for Digital video is another great book by Jay Rose
btw if you ever have a chance to take one of Jay's classes or lessions I HIGHLY recommend it
he has such a relaxed way of teaching you just seem to absorb the info . . . walking away saying "whoa"

dB short for decibel, used to measure sound loudness. There are several "scales", though which make for a lot of confusion. The use of negative numbers in digital is because  0 dBFS (decibels full scale) is the absolute top. Audio can't exceed this 0; it's all bits on 1111111111111111 and there is no 2! So, levels are always below this zero as negatives. That is, of course, a peak scale which is what most NLEs show. I won't go into VU and how its scale differs.

BTW: All the books mentioned are outstanding. There are also a few interesting articles at http://www.filmsound.org/

The level and scales basics are covered in Audio Levels and db Scales.

Anybody got a recommendation for a camera mic (xl2) that will be suitable for ENG and "man on the street interview" kind of stuff that won't pick up everything else?

The mic that comes with the XL2 tends to pick up everything in the room.

Thanks,

John
