i am sort of embarrassed by this question, because i have been editing on avids for 4 years and i should know this, but here goes. what' s frustrating is i' m sure i have done this before, but i can' t remember how. i want to use one of the mattes nested in one of the set backgrounds on ETK to create my own overlay on a media composer. i might even be wrong about being able to, since i work alternately and simultaneously on an avid media composer, symphony, xpress, and a final cut pro system. OR i may have dreamt that i did it somewhere in another life. i can do it in afterFX if all else fails and i may still, but i am now so curious about whether and how i thought i would ask.
thank you,
rebecca

Rebecca,

Yep, it' s easy to do in Avid MC. Actually if you follow the steps in the thread below this one, the one about using the transition effects, you will get the results you want. Static Mattes and the Transition Wipes are really the same thing, black and while, non-alpha, media as far as your Avid is concerned.

There is an alternate method if you want to work with two layers of video instead of three.

On V1 place your background video or animation
On V2 place the static matte and apply a Matte Key effect from the Effect Palette

Open the V2 nest and on the bottom layer (typically called 1.1) place the fill video

Scrub through the timeline and make sure it looks right to you. If its the opposite of what you expected, simply click the " swap sources" button in the Effect Editor.

That method is a bit more complicated but saves one line of video. I hope that helps.

You can use them in AE as well. Just use them as a Track Matte.
