Hey guys, I'm completely new to this stuff.  Uber newb.  I just bought the Editors Toolkit 10 and I was wondering if it is possible to apply color to the black & white overlay mattes.  Is this even possible?  I was reading that  After Effects might be the right program?  Can anyone point me in the right direction.  Thanks

I am also new, but will give an answer a whirl.  I think these mattes are for masking which needs white and black (and shades of grey in between) for that purpose.  I think you could pull them into Photoshop or Paing shop Pro and use the color change tool to change the white to another color easily. though...

Hi Geewhiz, welcome to the forums. I'm not sure why you would want to change the color, but photoshop could do it very easily. What are you trying to do exactly and what system are you using. With a little more info we can get you the answers you want. Here's a link to the support page, there are a few examples on how to use mattes.

Thanks for the quick responses.

I'm using a custom built system.  I have the Adobe Production Suite at my disposal.  There are several black&white motion overlay mattes included in the Toolkit.  I was thinking that those were possibly used to apply my own colors to?

So what I'm getting from you is that I could pull a frame of the overlay into Photoshop and change the colors.  But as far as keeping the motion, frame by frame would be my only solution?

Your NLE will probably let you apply a Tint filter to the clip thus allowing you to change the colors....

Other applications like After Effects allow you to do more complex changes...

Photoshop is not the tool for what you want...

I don't know of a way off hand to do it in premiere, but there may be a way. Still trying to figure out why you want to colorize them, what are you trying to do with them?
Here is the direct link to using the overlay mattes in premiere.

I see that there will be no simple solution for this.  I was just trying to do some customization of a particular overlay.
Thanks for the links, I'm eager to learn.

Ahh, I'm starting to see how these things work now.  If I make a colorful background of my liking I can make it shine through the overlay matte onto my video, correct?

I believe Eric Franks made the tutorial, so I'll move the thanks on to him. I'm glad you got it worked out, we don't want to just sell you products we want to teach you how to use them so you can get the most out of them as you can.
