Hi Folks; I recently shot a group of people on a theatrical stage. The stage lighting was brutal and the curtains were all black. The one saving grace was they had a 12 x 12 screen on the stage. I lit the stage with some construction lights in the hopes I could overlay a jumpback onto it. It worked sort- a- kinda. The image comes through perfectly on the screen but it also obscures the players cause its a dark JB. My question is there any way I can get the JB to fill only the screen and not be present in front of the players? Kinda like its a movie playing on the screen? Thanks -steve |

Steve: You need to use a mask. This would allow you to "cut out" part of the one video to let another show. Post back if you need more info. _____________________________ ConsultingByJeff Jeff Goldberg, MCSE, MCT, A+ VTX HD ETKP 4,11,12,16-20 THM 3-17,25-28,84,106,107 MDE 1-10,16-19,21,26 SWP,JB,JD,ETK,STX,SFX,VTX,PDE:ALL PKO,Canv,TT1-4,JDC1-3 Win7 x64 16GB Core i7 Vegas Pro x64 Canon A1S (in reply to Stephen) |

Hi JeffCCS; I actually have used a mask (perhaps not correctly though.) The JB plays great on the screen portion however the rest of the JB overlays on the talent making them far too dark. Is there any way I can restrict the JB just to the white screen portion and not overlay the players on the stage. When I shot it I was thinking I could use an Illuination setting mask or something like that to highlight just the screen portion. I guess thats my question Is there a masking technique that will allow me to just highlight the screen area and not overlay the whole image? Thx Steve (in reply to jeffcss) |

sounds like to me you need to Chroma key out the background...the problem you will run into is that your background is white and may chroma out some of the performers if you are not carefull. I would play around with a few keyers first to see if you can isolate your actors...if all else fails you can rotoscope them out one frame at a time...you have a spare week to do that right? :) If you want, send me a small peice of the footage you are playing with and I will see what I can do from here...if I can figure out the settings i'll post them here. Hi Graham; Wow what a kind offer... I may take you up on it but I would prefer to take a whack at it initially so I can learn the skillset. I thought I could use Chromo Keying but I had no success when I tried it. I think I'm doing it wrong. Can I ask you some questions? What clip do I set the chromo key on ( the stage clip or the JB clip?) I'm assuming the stage clip but no luck so far What order do I lay them on the timeline (stage clip on top, JB below etc) Thanks Graham (in reply to Graham) |

Steve: I use Sony Vegas, so I can't talk about other products, but here is the general idea: Lets say that the people video is the top track (track 1). This means that their track is going to cover up anything else put on lower tracks. In that case you would draw a mask around the white screen which is going to cut a hole in the white screen. With Vegas I have to indicate if the mask is negative or positive. A negative mask makes a hole INSIDE the mask and a positive mask makes everything OUTSIDE the mask the hole. Now anything on track 2 (below) would ONLY show through inside the mask area on track 1. So you put your JB there. There are more ways to do this, but since I am assuming the white screen doesn't move this might be the easiest way. _____________________________ ConsultingByJeff Jeff Goldberg, MCSE, MCT, A+ VTX HD ETKP 4,11,12,16-20 THM 3-17,25-28,84,106,107 MDE 1-10,16-19,21,26 SWP,JB,JD,ETK,STX,SFX,VTX,PDE:ALL PKO,Canv,TT1-4,JDC1-3 Win7 x64 16GB Core i7 Vegas Pro x64 Canon A1S (in reply to Stephen) |

Hi Jeff; Thanks for the clarification. I also use Vegas. How exactly do you *draw* a mask? I can add a mask fx but it encompasses the entire clip, but I haven't been able to find a way to draw the mask thx STeve (in reply to jeffcss) |

Right-click on the video clip that needs the mask and choose Event Pan/Crop. At the bottom of this window you will see a timeline. One labeled Position and the other labeled Mask. Make sure you are positioned at the beginning of the clip. Click on the checkbox next to the word mask. This will provide you with some new tools just to the left of your video clip. Click on the pen tool (the top one) and then click on your video. Keep clicking the outline of the object to be masked until you have gone all the way around. Click on the first point again to complete the mask. You might have to change the mask from negative to positive to get the proper "hole" cut. Some DJ products come with a seperate mask or alpha channel. That is when you use the Sony Mask Generator FX you mentioned. _____________________________ ConsultingByJeff Jeff Goldberg, MCSE, MCT, A+ VTX HD ETKP 4,11,12,16-20 THM 3-17,25-28,84,106,107 MDE 1-10,16-19,21,26 SWP,JB,JD,ETK,STX,SFX,VTX,PDE:ALL PKO,Canv,TT1-4,JDC1-3 Win7 x64 16GB Core i7 Vegas Pro x64 Canon A1S (in reply to Stephen) |

Very Cool... this sounds like exactly what I need, except I don't seem to have the mask option. I do have the position option. So I'm using Vegas 7 Platinum, is this feature only available in the premiuml Vagas 7 and DVD, or am I missing something ? (if it is then this is an omen cause I've been wrestling with whether to upgrade prior to the 31st) (in reply to jeffcss) |

Steve: The Sony Vegas website doesn't say if this option is available on the other versions. Here is a screen shot showing the mask option. If you don't have this then I would guess you need to upgrade. Thumbnail Image Attachment (1)

Stephen, Sorry I haven't been here to help (just got back from Hawaii last night) but I see you were well taken care of (NICE JOB JEFF ) Anyhow, I couldn't find any definitive information on the website either. Also downloaded the manual for V7 Platinum and didn't see it mentioned so... might be a good time to upgrade (plus you'd get unlimited tracks and other good stuff). (in reply to jeffcss) |

Hi Guys; Thanks for the info.. I to checked the site and manual. I definately don't have that option so it looks like I'm upgrading. Thanks for your speedy insightful posts Jeff , Graham and Jmeridith.. (not sure how I'm gonna pay for it) but I have 30 days to figure that out : ) I have another question. Most of the add on bonus products that come with Vegas 7 are downloadable, however they offer volume 1-5 of sound effects which I would have to have shipped. Cause I'm a Canadain customer that means shippring charges (PST, GST, border brokerage fees) and other assorted levies. It generally comes out to around $65 Canadain on a $300.00 order ( for example in the last month, cause of these extrodinary Juice deals I've spent close to $300.00 just on shipping charges, 5 separate orders) so does anyone have any expereince with the Sony Sound Effects ( I already have DJ Sound FX) Should I get them or pass and save the cash. Thanks -steve (in reply to jmeredith) |

Are you sure it is Sound Effects Vol 1 - 5??? Because that is normally $279. Is this available as an additional purchase at a special price? Maybe it's a special offer for Studio customers to move up because I didn't see it as an option on my upgrade page. On the upgrade page for Vegas + DVD Architect, the bonuses are Sony Pictures Sound Effects Series LE disk in the package version and Sound Effects Series Sampler CD for the downloadable version. IN ANY EVENT, I have Vol 1 - 5 and the quality is good but the overall number (approx 1,200) is a lot lower than DJ. If it's being offered at a special price... I would make sure to compare the prices to those at Safe Harbor as they consistently beat buying directly from Sony (just checked their site and they appear to be down at the moment though) (in reply to Stephen) |

Just checked Sony's site... it's just a sampler disc of 174 sounds. Based on that, I don't personally think they'd be worth the $65 (ONLY from a financial standpoint and NOT because they are poor quality) quote: (in reply to jmeredith) |

Thanks for the clarification. I opted not to get the loops for the same reason. I've only had the professional version for about an hour but I'm really happy I got it. It has some really cool work flow features and appears to be alot more responsive than the Platnium version. Thanks again for your help JMeridith, Jeff and Graham (in reply to jmeredith) |
