I even posted and said, "I know better but I am buying into it"...Oh I just have to follow the "MAGIC" I should have put two and two together. "MAGIC" DJ is located where? Florida! The Orlando "Magic" is from where? Florida! I knew it was to good to be true! Even when they had "Shaq" Double the cost of the certificate. Why am I surprised? I knew better, I knew better, I knew better... Why would I think maybe a new toolkit to apply it toward? I mean Toolkit Vol 10 is over a year old and we still call that "NEW" Oh please somebody kick me...

Hey Dave! You're plan is working. Everyone will spend their gift certificates within the next two weeks and you'll be free...except me...ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha....

I'm holding mine...  I'm fighting the "force" in 2007!  A little torment toward you knowing some of us still have our GC...instead of always being in us. I won't spend my GC now just because it's a good deal. I won't spend my GC now just because it's a good deal. I won't spend my GC now just because it's a good deal.  Wait! What's that? Is that a new special I smell on the horizon????????

FIRING A CUSTOMER - 1/4/2007 8:23:23 AM

Two quick things: (those who know me understand that by quick...I mean less than 2 hours!)

I have had to fire 3 customers in the 6+ years I've had The PowerPlant (www.thepowerplant.tv) Like many of us, I am a reasonably nice guy and get along with 99.9% of the population. I 'fired' these customers when I realized no matter what I did...I was not going to be able to satisfy or make these guys (actually 2 guys and 1 young lady) happy. No amount of compensation, compromise or professional courtesy would satisfy these folks...and I finally had to say "I don't want your money, and you are no longer welcomed here." It's hard. It's hard to turn down cash when you run a cash-flow business...but, you have to look past the present. I was spending about the same amount of time 'maintaining' ONE of these bad customers...as I spent with 10-15 'good' customers. It just didn't make sense financially (which is what most business decisions come down to eventually)...not to mention mentally. One of the firings was easy. The customer was verbally abusing one of my staff members and I just wouldn't have it. Not only did I 'fire' him, I escorted him out of the studio in the middle of his edit session...his very, very expensive edit session. Tough thing to to...but, has to be done.

Second...a bit of "Juice History." I think I was present at a 'Dave-Hebel-fires-a-customer-event' at NAB one year. Every year at a show like NAB...with thousands and thousands of people who come through the booth...you are going to encounter a few you just can't please. No matter how deep the discounts, no matter how much product we literally GAVE away, no matter what...there are people who just weren't going to be happy...and you couldn't stand there and take up all your valuable 'face-to-face-with-customers' time with one bad apple. Don't mistake this for poor customer service. I'm talking about 'firing' a customer after all other means have been exhausted. I had a guy one year, after a live demo, literally yell at me. He was a Motion Graphics Designer who told me (loudly and repeatedly) that Jump Backs were CRAP...the designs were terrible...the colors were bad...that he could make better stuff in his sleep. Then, he stepped to the counter and bought a 10-pak (one of the Hebel specials that particular hour, that particular year) AFTER blasting me and the products. I couldn't resist...so I asked him why he was buying such a terrible product. He said that '...even though this stuff sucks...it's faster than making it from scratch and my stupid clients like it.'

I'm guessing I wasn't the first person to fire this guy.

Luckily...99.9% of Juice customers (and all customers in general) are not worth of firing...many are even a downright pleasure to deal with. I try to be this kind of customer when I'm on the customer-side of a transaction. (However...occasionally Best Buy just pushes me TOO far!)

Peace to all...long live DJTV and Go Buckeyes!

Rick

I've had to do it a few times, not fun and a hard decision, but afterwards it's much better.

As manager of a few places and also as someone who hires freelance crews I've had to fire people before, when you have to take time to deal with issues with a bad employee and you end up spending most of your time dealing with issues from one bad employee instead of running your business and dealing with all of your good employees you may need to fire them.
It will make your business run better, your other employees will be happier and everything will work out better, it's tough to do but worth it if you have a bad employee.
Someone who complains about everything, can't do the job, doesn't get along with anyone, always thinks of reasons not to do something or always says no, is late etc... just some examples.

Hind sight is 20/20
I bought  $300.00 worht of GC's that for the next week and 1/2 are worth $600.00 and I already own all the video product that DJ makes. I am thinking about adding to my Juice Drops collection but I already have all the ones I like (I'm not a print designer)
I guess I feel Martyrs' pain. This smoking deal is sitting there and I cant take advantage of it.
No need to kick me however.
Peace

What Rick?

Thanks for letting me go. I have to say I would never fire a customer. Yes, we can't please them all and sometimes it takes a little more time and talent to make them say, "It's just ok". But fire them? Maybe the talent is what they thought or promised they were buying into? Who knows? Can't please everyone. That does not mean that you right and they are just stupid and hard to please. If George Locus were hard to work with because he wanted perfection "Would you fire him?" Or would you find away to make it happen because it’s George? Does he put his pants on any differently than the client you kicked to the curb? As for as the client that talked to your employee like a dog. There’s no reason for that. I can understand. At out company we push hard to make our clients happy. They aren’t always easy to please. Some of our clients say that the DJ's backgrounds are cheap and cheesy. So that's their opinion, Should I show them to the door because we disagree? I mean I said, “I felt like I got the short end” and you fired me? Maybe your client felt shorted and spoke up and you fired them? You did me! Maybe they got the best end of the deal by being fired.

Most of the time clients just need to be managed. I am usually able to size up a clients cheese factor and marry them up with the right Juice product and they are usually impressed. I own the entire juice Video collection and I would say that for most clients maybe...MAYBE... there are 4-6 JB's that will tickle the clients fancy. Our job is to service the client by providing what they ask for. I have had people complain about our cameras (JVC HD100's) our edit suites (PPro and DPS velocity) and our location (Not in Toronto). I want their business but not their attitude so I usually offer them the number/name of a local competitor and usually they realize that I expect a certain level of respect and I am perfectly happy to pass their business on to someone else who might take their crap. This is the way that I manage my customers. Hope this helps.
Peace
D

The problem is people who practice (un)common courtesy are considered by some to be weak and people who "speak their mind" or "tell it like it is" (in their opinion) see that as a virtue.
Don't do or say what they want when  and how they want it and they are offended - and offending someone is the biggest crime of all - unless you are the one who is offensive.
CIVILization depends on people treating each other with courtesy and understanding. Most people still respect that and will bend over backwards to accommodate a pleasant person.

Well put. To quote Dr.Phil (my wife would be so proud) "You have to teach people how to treat you" a good attitude and a genuine smile will usually bring most people around. In my experience very few people need to be "fired" but everyone needs to know that you will respect them and expect the same in return.
Peace
D

This is where I am glad that I don't work for clients.  Sometimes I want to fire my boss but that is another thread.  As for this thread I hope he doesn't read it.
