For the first time ever at NAB this year (www.nabshow.com) there will be a two-day workshop with training and exams for earning a Sony Certified Vegas Editor (SCVE) credential. Details here:

Jeffrey,

What are the advantages of becoming a "certified" user?  Is it more valuable for someone trying to get a job at a post house than someone like me who runs their own business?  Just curious.

I feel it's useful for both. It's a credential that looks good on a resume and reassures clients, too. Plus, it's two days of solid training that can only make you a better Vegas user and editor. As a business owner, too, having my SVCT moniker has certainly helped my standing among my clients and the industry.

Knowing the information needed to become certified, makes you able to do more.
Being certified just gives you another piece of paper you have to buy a frame for.

I would really like to get certified (because of all the benefits) - but I can't afford it right now.  I hope it's a success because I would definitely consider it in the future!

i did my scve cert last august. in a sense, it's like wizard said, "another piece of paer you you have to buy a frame for," but on the other hand, there are some benefits. mainly, you can pick up on some things that you may not have known about vegas (or video in general), or at the very least, become more pro/efficient with it. of course, another certification always looks good on your resume if you're looking to get a job, but it also looks good when you're trying to explain your rates to those people who just don't understand why it should cost more than $10/hour to edit when the guy down the street will do it for $5. the certification is still not terribly popular right now, but with time i'm sure it will be, and carry more weight.

I hope you're not serious about the $10/hour (let alone $5/hour) for your services. If so, I guarantee you won't be in business long. Jeepers, even MacDonald's pays $11.25/hour here and all you need is a ride to get there. I would hope you were just trying to make a point.

yeah wiz, i was just making a point. but some people still can't fathom why they should even pay that much. they're usually the ones who come back AFTER giong to the cheaper person & asking me to fix it. now, and in the future, they're willing to pay whatever i say. muahahaha.
