I'm not a Vegas user but a friend of mine is and he has a question that I just don't know how to do in this app.  I'm sure it's simple, because it's a very typical effect (and somewhat dumb in my mind, but he's a friend so I try not to judge).  :)

He's trying to do the scrolling Star Wars style credits in a video.  You know, so there's a slant to them and they roll.  Anyone able to help me help him?  Thanks!

Use the Media generator to do the scrolling credits, you can use solid background or have it with a alpha background.  Then use track motion, it's the white box with an arrow pointing to the blue box in the video track title area.  After clicking track motion change the upper left menu that says "source alpha" to "3D source alpha".  You should now have X,Y, and Z axis.  Using layout 4 in the upper right box labeled "left", you want to grab the circle with the cursor when it is a clockwise arrow and us it to spin the axis.  Tell your friend to have the text already typed and the cursor on the timeline over the scrolling part so he can make sure it is tilting properly.   Pretty easy.

For added fun ... place it over the Starfield in the Noise textures. Add the "add noise" video effect to the starfield for a slight twinkling effect. Also, use a little Event pan/crop on the starfield and zoom and rotate slightly for some added movement. The Lens flare placed just right can look like a distant sun.

I'll let him know, thanks Jeff!

Question for you on a sidenote: Being a Sony Vegas Certified Trainer, has that title gotten you a lot of opportunities that you might not have had otherwise?  I was considering getting the Adobe Certification with it's Video line of products (not for training though, just to be a certified 'expert') and wasn't sure if it was worth the $150 since it'd be money out of pocket for me.  What's your opinion on that?  (Or anyone else's opinion who's lurking that also has a certification.)

I think getting the certification forces you to learn a lot more about the product than you might do on your own. Many times you have to know about all the features, not just the most popular ones. Plus if you did want to teach it at some time in the future you would be ready.

Being certified means you've proven your prowess with a given software application. If you go for a job and or use it to attract clients, it is a credential that means something. If you just want to do it, I agree with jeffcss above as getting ready to pass a cert exam ensures you really know your stuff, and that's never bad. As a trainer, it's far beyond being a user as you have to not only know what you're talking about, but also be able to teach it ... well!

But be forewarned, Adobe doesn't do all that much for certified trainers. I've known quite a few that went on their own after a while and created their own, better material...
