I frequently have 2 or more instances of Vegas 7.0d open as I cut highlights from events and place them into a seperate veg file.  Any reason why there is about a 20 second delay when switching from one to the other, but not vice versa.   My specs are 3 GB Ram (4 physical and 3 recognized by no-bit, I mean 32 bit windows XP srv Pack 2), a 2.4 GHZ duo core, a system drive and a RAID 0 video drive, and a 512MB video card.  It works but is very tedious.

I know Vegas "lets go" of media files it is using when the focus changes to another app ("Media Offline") - that might be part of it. One of the biggest things that causes Vegas to pause is redrawing the thumbnails on the clips on the timeline: maybe one project just has more on the timeline to redraw?

The smallest of the two has 3min of footage and the larger has 18min.  It doesn't seem to be having trouble bringing media online, plus I just went in and changed both instances of Vegas in the Task manager to realtime from normal.  My other computer 2.13 duo core, 2 gig ram and 2TB of raid storage over 5 drives doesn't have the same problem.  I almost wonder if it isn't the graphics card thats having trouble.  I just swapped one of my dual Viewsonic 20" LCD displays for a 23" Samsung LCD HDTV.  I don't have an affinity for ATI and really believe Nvidia may be a solution.  Any ideas on how to check if it's the Vid card with a physical swap?

It might be the video overlay mode... but you could check without swapping the card: open 01.veg and then 02.veg and note the delay in the switch. Close both projects, then open 02.veg and then 01.veg and see if it is the order the projects are open or if it is the projects themselves.

And on ATI vs. nVidia (from your other thread): I don't think one is better than the other. As a gamer, I've owned both at different times. This model is better than that model, but I don't think you can say nVidia is better than ATI. Or vice versa.

Between how Windows, ATI and nVidia handle multi-monitors, I do like the nVidia control panel, however. That would not be a deciding factor for me in buying a card, tho.

I've used nVidia and ATI cards as well. I prefer the nVidia. I game a little, mostly Flight Simulator X and CounterStrike and the nVidia definitely renders faster.

From your configuration, it sounds as if the video card may be the issue.  RAID 5 is a little slower on writes, which could cause some delays as well as files get fragged a bit...

I frag every few days.  What I found was that when having two instances open of Vegas 7.0d and the same source material overlapping in some parts you need the second instance (I was going from 10 veg files from various tapes in HDV to a single highlight video for a wedding) you need to save project fies with the second instance.  I haven't needed to do it before, but I was having a file or two give me problems.  After saving source material with the new file it was maybe a 2 second hiccup switching between the two.  Watch out for Dave Hebel Rick, he sets up shop in your wallet and doesn't leave until he's taken everything.  I have over 50pcs of Juice animations and music as well as graphics plus all the ETK's and the Sound FX.  I don't need it, but hey it was a good deal.  It's jsut that sometimes a odd job will pop up and juice is the only answer.  i'm getting ready to do a retirement party for a doctor and they want, in addition to recording the entire retirement party, a 10 minute highlight of his career.  Jumpback or JB14 Medical is going to look awesome on the 10ft projector they are setting up.  Do I want hearts pumping, a pulse line, DNA strands, cells?????  Oh thy Juice, let me count the ways.

Hahahaha, isn't that the truth, Charles. I have spent a small fortune on DJ stuff recently and I keep telling my wife they run good specials. Of course the $2k bill last month didn't please her too much, special or not... :)

I'm finding that, even on fast machines, HD seems to slow Vegas down. The SWIPES, for example, are REALLY slow in Vegas. I have to run them, or Shift-B fast render them, to get them to even play.

Consider this Rick, what is THE HD editor now?  I say Vegas works as well as any of the others.  Your reference to swipes also points to something in particular.  Except for JBHD's Swipes are the only other HD offering from Juice.  I have three JDHD's and haven't utilized them yet.  Right now I frequently work with three .m2t file streams stacked on a timeline with audio and another SD with audio trackset and sure it slows down some, but usually I run 24 frames progressive and only slow on transitions.  My comp is sufficient at 2.4GHZ core duo, 4 gig RAM, a 160GB System Drive, a 320x2 Raid 0 video drive, and this weekend I'm installing an archive drive for 500 GB.  Also the vid card is the above mentioned ATI X1900XTX 512MB.  My other two comps step down to a 2.13duo, 2Gig, and a 3.06p4 with 1 gig (it's really only a server and on occasion it Network renders for me) and lastly my Laptop.  A Dell M1710 XPS thats a year old and has a 2ghx centrino and 1 gig.  It will not handle HD.  So back to HD.  I do event recording with 3-Canon XH-A1 cams always in HD.  Weddings, Parties, Plays, Graduations, you name it.  Delivery is always in SD on a DVD.  What the HD does is allows my "stationary" or floater cam to be panned and zoomed as needed since you can take the HD footage and loose very little going from 1440x1080 to 720x480.  I really make a 3 camera shoot look like 5 or 6 cameras.  Vegas allows me to do it with ease.  I will add I watch everything in Preview Half as it's sufficient for my needs and when doing color correction I just temporarily bump it up to Best Full.  Thats with three streams and four lines of audio switching to and fro.  I read on your other post about your computer and if your bottle necking there must be a problem.  I think the biggest problem right now is 32bit.  I was looking into XP 64bit last night actually and since none of my video software will utilize it it would be a waste.  I know two of my motherboards will support up to 8gig of RAM.  Vegas 8 will be the answer.  I just appreciate what we can do now, and have been able to since 05' or 06' that other people had to go out and buy new software for.  Anyways.  Welcome to the forum Rick.  Love Vegas and it will love you back, just not as much sometimes.

Hi Charles,

Oh, I do love Vegas and it has been good to me. I think I'm just going through the initial HD shock as things aren't working like I'm used to...

Hey, do you love your XH-A1? We just got two of them and shot last week for the first time with them. Awesome!!!  My only complaint was that I ruined one shot due to sunlight. It was very hot, 98F and sunny. I had trouble seeing in the viewfinder and ths scene washed out (my white balance obviously didn't work because I couldn't see the WB thing flashing)... But that was a short shot out of many and the second camera saved the scene...

I miss the lightweight of the GL2s, though we still have them, but love the power and flexibility of the XH-A1. A great camera! I shot the whole day free-hand and my forearm only got tired at the end (more heat related I think).  I'll be shooting on tripod and hand-held in prison in about 3 weeks for a corporate training video. I got Spotted Eagle's training on the XH-A1 from VASST and it was excellent. I should be getting Elite Video's training for the same camera tomorrow (I was a bit nervous with the new camera since it is more complex than the GL2 which I felt extremely comfy with)...

I'm wondering, though, why Vegas seems slow on HD with my machine. It is super fast twin Opturon AMD with 4Gb RAM and 64bit processors (I had Win X64 and downgraded to XP Pro about 2 months ago - way too many incompatibilities with X64, but it was fast)...

I used the Vasst video as well.  I purchased it specifically to cut through the layers of cusomization and found it to help tremendously.  Let me know what you think of the Elite Video DVD as I may get it as well.  As for the XH-A1, I jumped from 2 GL1's to 3 XH-A1 and business couldn't be better.  The SD quality is even better than a friends XL2.  Plus take into account of steady shots with software pans and zooms and my God it's smooth.  I had to reteach my guys how I wanted them to shoot.  "don't move the camera, just frame the shot"  We'll be in toruble when we go to HD delivery, but for now it's so much easier.  As for your white balance problem I guess you need a monitor (with hood) and a LANC controller.  I use a Varizoom 7" wide SD monitor for general framing and screen information and a Canon ZR-2000 for control.  You'll read alot of bad or iffy things about the 2000, but in my experience it's great.  It is a cheaper, not cheap, plastic housing, but none of the Varizooms will control the focus and they do not have the peaking or Mag buttons on them.  Other goodies I put on my XH-A1 is Impact brand 970 series batteries.  I've had zero problems with them in a variety of conditions.  I only use Sony DVM-63HD or DVM-85HD miniDV tapes and experience 0 dropouts.  I use Smith-Victor on camera lighting and balance all the cameras to a 20" Lastolite WB screen.  It sucks getting in post and having three different WB's.  The 20' screen, get as large as you can, allows you to set up the cameras where they need to be and focus, with the great 20x zoom, to where the "talent" read bride and groom, will be.  I really need to start using the temperature setting so that every camera is the same no questions asked.  Haven't done it yet and don't know why.  Last bit I'll leave you with is the Pelican 1620 case I purchased.  1 case with two cameras, 6 batteries, 16 tapes and two chargers.  In a box that weighs less than 30lbs and is lockable.  Later.

Charles, you should be a trainer (if you're not already). You packed a ton of great advice in that last post and my wallet will be emptier as I head to Samy's Video this weekend to buy goodies... :)

I like the big white balance screen idea. It's really hard, outside, to see the little 1 sq ft card... Specially when it's really bright. I did use a Hoodman once several years ago and found it kind of useless. Some people swear by them (I swore at it)... :)

We use Varizooms as well and I've been looking at the Pelican case just today. A friend of mine has it for his photo equipment and it's one vs. two bags... I like that.

Impact 970s are not the Canon brand, I gather. I had batteries on the GL2 that get stuck coming out of the XH-A1 so I don't use them. These go in and out easily? Same time as the BP970s from Canon? About 4-5 hours optimally...

Yes, we need a monitor for framing shots. That would help. I have a pretty good eye, but could use more help framing, specially outdoors... I'll look at the Varizoom 7" monitor...

Sounds like you do great business. Congrats!!!

Thanks again for all the help. Much appreciated. :)

The Impacts are the ONLY brand that is not Canon that I have heard 0 probelms about.  The run time is 4-5 hours.  approx $130 through BHPhotoVideo.com.  Well worth it.

Thanks, Charles. Yep, that's a lot cheaper than the $180each I paid for the Canon BP970s...

I had another brand and had to use a Swiss Army knife to prod them out of the XH-A1. Not fun at all...
