I used to use Scenalyzer, which was great, to capture the SD footage, index tapes, etc. It saved a ton of time identifying good clips and ignoring bad ones.

What do you folks use to capture HD into Vegas? I'm using Vegas right now, but it seems a lot more tedious.

Any ideas?  Any Scenalyzer-like products for HD work?

Thanks.

Whats tedious about Vegas capture?  I just plug up the XH-A1, hit the capture icon, name the tape, and click record.  It seems really fluid and straight forward to me.  Are you using the internal capture function that prompts for SD or HD/SDI or is it a small window that pops up in the lower left by default?

Hi Charles,

The capturing is easy and fluid. The naming of clips is tedious and time consuming, unless I'm doing something wrong. I've always used Scenalyzer which indexes the tape and lets you preview and name all your clips as well as ignore the bad ones. Then it only captures what you want. Very nice, but doesn't support HD... :(

When Vegas prompts me, I use the default HDV which is a small in-line window in the lower left.

After capturing, I've been going through the clips, one by one and naming them in the media pool. Seems slow. Again, I may be doing something wrong...

PS - my video sales guy at Samy's says "thanks" for all the recommendations you made. Seems I'm going to go broke there... hehehehehe

I've got one for you Rick, what type of 72mm filter are you using on your A1's?  I'm using a Tiffen UV and getting a horrible reflection form the sun, off of the filter, that shows the rings leading up to the lense.  It's necessary to shoot into the light with what we're doing and on occasion it's going to inadvertantly happen so I need a fix.  I WILL not remove the filter as all it takes is one time and $2000 please for repairs.  Just wanted to throw in if you haven't checked out this Canon page it's very worthwhile.  http://www.usa.canon.com/app/html/HDV/XHA1/index.shtml Good stuff in print with no opinions to skew the facts of what is or isn't.  Back to Vegas capture.  I used batch capture for the first time the otherday and can see where half the time it would save alot of trouble.  I agree with the naming part.  I don't have a solution except paying a college student $10 an hour to sort clips.  Someone has to exploit the educated youth of america.

Hahahaha, that's funny... We do that too. :)

Actually, I purchased two Hoya UV filters, good quality and had no issues shooting outdoors.  That's the first thing I did...   Optically, Hoya's are better than the Tiffens. Around $50 each I think...  I have some Hoya polarizers as well (about $90 each).

I'll check that site out... Thanks.

Did you use Scenalyzer before doing HD work?  I heard about it from one of Spotted Eagle's videos and bought it. Was worth the $50...

By the way, lesson learned as well...

Sometimes, on shorter shoots, I'll turn off scene detection and capture a large clip and quickly cut it up in the trimmer... That strategy doesn't work too well with HD. Performance rapidly degenerates on HD because of the compressed files...

So I recaptured my latest shoots and went from 10 clips to about 85 clips. But, now it's whizzing on the timeline... Live and learn!  HD is not SD...
