Folks, am I off my tripod or didn't we have a comments section in the video forum (pre-new server)? I think we need to re-instate this section for registered members.

Do we need a re-post section for amendments made to clips based upon critical input? I think we do, if we have time to do so. Matt and Graham have recently given me input that caused me to edit an in-process DVD. In short, they validated some concerns I had, in particular: red bleeds. In the end I had to compromise with the wants and needs of the recipient (she had her in-the-far-distant-I-hope wedding theme picked out until WETK2 appeared).

Perhaps we need to have an instance of private input available for those unwilling to to have public criticisim aired for all to see. I think we need further input on this matter to see if it bears fruit.

Matt, Graham, Fred (and any others) please weigh in with your thoughts on these matters.

Again, thank you DJ for providing this forum that allows me to meet people that are willing to help me in this craft.

Semper Fi,
Billy

Personally, I like to give and receive feedback and leave it public. Lots can be learned by not only having your work commented on but others will gain valuable insight as they build there own projects.

The Photo Gallery has comments. But I guess this is no longer active. There are no video screenshots visible although it says there would be 7.

I do agree. A comments section would be much appreciated.

Keep the ideas coming.. jp and i will give thought what we can do.  I think at a minimum some changes to the way Showcase section works would be nice.  I think it would be nice to be able to leave comments, ratings, etc  (perhaps uploader could determine if he wants people to do this or not).  It would also be nice if there was a better way to enter which Digital Juice Products you used.. Even to the point of giving specific Jump Back No.'s or ETK set no.s ..

It sounds like in addtion to the DJ Showcase gallery you guys are talking about some sort of Collaboration Showcase that allows you to upload anything (even those things that don't use juice products) for critical feedback, inspiration,  and suggestions from others.   Perhaps there could be option to keep feedback private (both Uploader and commenter could have this option)...

I think it would be good if you could make coments without putting your name on them. I think you get better feedback, because people wouldn't worry about offending anyone, and they can give their true suggestions, ideas and critical feedback.

I also like the idea of listing specific juice elements. You could also ad software used.

David, I do believe you have grasped my initial post in its entirety. I have no problems with posting and getting feedback within the forum. However, I do believe that we need a dedicated place for this and not your announcement thread. Another layer within the forum perhaps? If so, it would need the fanfare from DJ (inline with me email that we get) within that forum that "so-and-so" just posted.

Semper Fi,
Billy

I like the idea of having more fields and adding comments/ratings to the showcase.. That would be cool and not too much work.  One thing I am debating right now is that the showcase uses the Shopping/My Account login when it probably should use the forum login info.  It would be quite a challenge to change it with so many posts (as some people who have posted may not be forum members) but it seems like the forum crowd gets the most use of it.  What are everyone's thoughts?

1 log in would be good with me, but its not that big of a deal if you had to register, it would just be a one time thing

Yeah, a SSO would be cool .

Oohhh - just for those of you who are not familiar with IT technobabble: SSO means "Single Sign On" - one login for all services.

Have you guys thought any further about adding a comments area directly to individual showcase clips?  I think it would be neat.

Here are my suggestions:  Limit characters to about 100-150.  That way it is for comments not forum type discussions.

A rating system.  Similar to the scores on our posts.  Maybe the showcase with the highest weekly rating gets Home Page visibility.

One thing that I would like to see would be an option to view clips in a larger viewer.  Some of the ones that I have seen lately I would like to see in greater detail

Those are just off the top of my head at 10:35 p.m.

My main concern right now about larger video is upload/download time and filesize.  If everyone had Sorenson Squeeze or access to the SV3 Pro codec, it would not be a problem.  Other option would be to try out H.264 video, although that would require everyone to use QuickTime 7 Player.  Maybe for the interim I could try adding a player that sets the size from 240x180 to 320x240.  Not sure if you would see more details on most clips due to the scale.

Comments/ratings are a great idea.  I am currently rebuilding the video showcase to allow choosing actual product volumes instead of just the product line.  I will see about adding comments as well.

I would like to see a trial of the H.264 codec on your site. It could work like this: We upload video in the current format; upon request we upload in H.264 at a higher resolution to (another location?) . . .

Installing QT 7 would only be a requirement if you wanted to see higher res postings.

IMHO, ulitmately H.264 is the way to go regardless of output resolution.

Billy

I uploaded to my site my version of the Oscar effect that was shown last weekend nd used the H264 codec. It works like a hot damn. And a lot smaller file the sorenson codec too.

h264 is great, I use it a lot, the big problem is you need QT7 to playt it. Not a huge deal, but at my work they don't want to load QT on every machine, they are windows only and want to use wmp. A few of my relatives that have PC's couldn't figure it out either. I do a weekly podcast for family and friends and I also put weekly videos of my kids on my web site using h264, most can view it because they have macs and I've walked them through the process, but there are still a few that have problems. Hopefully wmp will come out with an update, but untill then you might want to hold off, or just do some testing.

To maximize compatibility with widest range of users, for now we will stick with Sorenson Video 3.  In the future we will probably bump it up to H.264, so you may want to save your showcase submissions to h.265 version at 240x180 and 320x240 for easy transition later.

I am almost finished with the video showcase updates... I think you guys will dig it.  =)

One question: At this point during development I have dropped the "portfolio mode"... has anyone used this?  It will likely be replaced by "sorts" that will allow you to show only videos by certain user, sort by highest ratings, most recent, juice picks, etc.

I used the portfolio a few times, and have told some clients, but I'm not sure if they viewed it. It was a nice feature but I wouldn't be upset if you took it away. And is you can sort by user thats pretty much the same thing anyway. can't wait to see the new features.

I am with Graham and Matt, I mainly use it to see what I have on there to keep from double submitting.  If there is still a feature to allow for looking at an individuals work versus everyones then that should be just fine - select your own name.

When do you foresee the new stuff coming on-line?

How are things going with the Showcae updates and the Chat room?

I have been deep in the web... too much work!  The new showcase will allow you to click a link that says "only show work from this user", so in effect the portfolio mode will still be there, but accessible for everyone.  Also, there is a new vertical layout with detail pages for each video.  You will also be able to select the individual product volumes you have used (up to 10 choices per upload)

Some other highlinghts:

User Rating and comments
Sort by Most recent videos, Rating (high to low)

and maybe a sort where you can only show videos you haven't rated or commented on.

Once I launch this, I will explore the option of allowing you to edit your details and products used, uploading h364 or larger versions, etc.  Mainly right now I need a better base to work from as we have seriously outgrown the current application.
