I am new to using DJ products, and am currently using Pinnacle Studio 10.0. I am having difficulty getting Pinnacle to recognize a Swipe after it's rendered. Does anyone know what the "save settings" should be that are compatible? Also, although I have used Pinnacle a great deal prior to DJ, I am wondering if I should use another video editing product. Thoughts?

Studio is a good entry level program but you are IMMENSELY limited on what you can do with it. If you want to be able to use multiple audio and video tracks in order to layer effects, etc. you are going to want to step up to something a little more powerful.

AVI files, uncompressed with Alpha channel should work in Studio, but Brian is right on the software, and it sounds like you are ready for the next step. Might I recommend: - Adobe Premiere Elements - Sony Vegas Movie Studio There are others, but the reason why I always recommend these two is that: (1) They are under $100 (2) They have 90% of the features that you will ever need (3) The user interface is exactly the same as their professional siblings, so when you are ready to go pro, you can do so without skipping a beat. Another great option is the free version of AVID. I can recommend it for the same reasons I recommend the other two, and it has the very serious advantage of being free, so you might as well give it a shot. It also has another advantage in that it is the Real Deal as far as professional editing software goes. The only downside is that it is not as friendly as the other two apps, probably because it IS the veteran professional champion. If you have aspirations to work in Hollywood some day, AVID looks great on a resume! (in reply to flascrnwrtr) |

Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate your input. As I mentioned, I have used Pinnacle for years, but really do want to go to the next level. I don't mind spending the $$$'s to have the right tools, but I've also been around long enough to know you don't necessarily have to. I have been leaning toward AVID, and would also like to know if you have a recommendation on a PC that would keep the workload "moving" quickly. I'm not interested in the"minumum" requirements, but one that will give me the power that I need. Thanks again for your response. (in reply to D. Eric Franks) |

light86, see my sig for a forum with lots of Studio users. Some of us, me included, don't use Studio any longer while others continue to be diehards. I moved to Sony Vegas Movie Studio. We even have a Juicer sub-forum there. Hope to see you there.

There is a low price upgrade from Studio to Liquid Edition. Check out the Avid website for details. I think the upgrade price was $199 though I am not sure. Liquid Edition also has a Studio look and feel interface you can enable until you learn to change the way you think about movie editing. Download as many of the free trials and make your decision on what works for you. _____________________________ Jim "It is fun doing the impossible" Quote from Walt Disney (in reply to MSmart) |

quote: D.... This is the "Avid Liquid" portion of the DJ Forum. The least anyone can do is advise this person to stay in "family." That makes Avid Liquid the most logical upgrade path. Plus there are fantastic financial incentives to do so. For $200 bucks or so, one can get a real NLE that will do EVERYTHING you want plus import Studio 10 projects. _____________________________ Andy Browne Streaming Videos LIQUID IMMERSION 2007 Call me on SKYPE at abrowne1950 (in reply to D. Andy, I agree, I was somewhat amused with D's recommendation, not only because if left out Liquid but what he did choose as "next step" from Studio.

There is also a PDF around that will help you ease into Liquid from Studio not to mention some really good tutorials out there. Have a look at Andy Browne's site for some very good unbiased reviews.

Before embarking on the upgrade path, if you render your Swipes as an uncompressed AVI with alpha channel, you can in fact use them in S10, although it's a little fiddly. Put your two clips on the main track, and start by placing the Swipe on the overlay track, directly below & "between" the two clips (i.e. half below the first & half below the second). If you scrub back and forth and view the effect, you can nudge the Swipe either back or forward to get it in exactly the right position.

quote:Sometimes too, you can put a regular dissolve transition on the main track above where the Swipe is on the overlay track. This sometimes makes for a smoother transition.

I don't believe Studio has the ability to cope with double alpha swipes. Double alpha swipes require overlapping tracks and a matte track. If anyone has a way to use double alpha swipes in Studio, please speak up. Double alpha swipes are way cool. _____________________________ Jim "It is fun doing the impossible" Quote from Walt Disney (in reply to derslatz) |
