OK, here is another newbie question for all you Vegas gurus out there. I can't seem to find the answere to this in the help files. I have a large (about 30 min) file that I want to split into smaller chunks, hopefully making them easier to edit and/or render out as separate files. I know how to split the file, but can you save the smaller chunks as individual .avi files? If so, how?

Thanks for the help.

I'm not a Vegas user, so maybe I shouldn't post, but does Vegas have the ability to add markers in the timeline and then an option to render between the markers?  I'm just trying to apply other application logic to Vegas.  Please nobody beat me up for posting in the Vegas forum.

Couple of things ...

Add the longer file to the Trimmer. Make time selections of the parts you want. Create a subclip of the selection. Name as you see fit. Now in the Project Media wil be the smaller chunks as subclips. (no render!)

Drag piece to T/L, Double-click it to place time selection around it. Choose File > Render as and select format. Make sure the Render Loop Region only is checked.

Thanks for the quick response. Jeff, I'll try that as soon as I get home, hopefully before the chat starts .

Or better yet, use the letter 'S' for splitting your clips. Just put the marker where you want to split your clip and then click S.
As for the trimmer, I've been using Vegas for some 9 months now and never not once have I used it. I personally just drag everything to my timeline and start splitting and trimming there, working my way down the timeline on the project. Does anybody else work like this or do you prefer the trimmer?

Matjusm,
I work just like you mentioned.  I think it comes to a matter of computer power because as JPF mentioned subclips don't require the additional render that splits and cuts on the timeline do.  2.4 core2duo overclocked to 3.0 with 4GB ram lets me forego the trimmer step.  Someone with a P4 would probably need a slightly different work flow.

Subclips are "vritual" clips and still reference the original clips. The process does not create new footage, only trimmed references in the Project Media pool. Many people like working this way as opposed to Split on Timeline. I usually Split on Timeline as mentioned. The Trimmer really does have some useful tools in it -- I use it a lot for audio 'cos I put in Markers and Regions using Sound Forge -- which appear in the Trimmer and on the Timeline now, too.

I've never understood what is the point of using markers and inpoints/outpoints. Ok, they probably have some application somewhere but none whatsoever when it comes to my work. Especially with music- I want to be flexible and edit the track when I can see the results right away on my final video and not mess around with trimming it before that.
Oh well, I guess its just a matter of whatever you're comfortable with.

By the way, is it normal that Vegas doesn't offer very good preview playback for certain formats? Like for example .mov and .avi? At least thats what I've experienced but then .mpg for example plays flawlessly. I wouldn't say my computer is the hottest thing on the market but its ok so it shouldn't be so much about that (or is it?).

specs?  I run .m2t in best full if it doesn't have effects applied to it.  No skip or stagger here.

Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForece 7600 GT, 1GB RAM (I know, I have to get more of that). By the way, what is that .m2t format? What are those files that come in that format?

HDV..I don't see why you'd have jumpy playback.  Try to find End It All (a program) on the internet.  You may have some of your resources tied up that the program could free up.  Run it before editing and it may make a difference.

One way markers are good is if you have numerous clips or photos you want to cut to the beat of the music. Instead of putting clips in one at a time and triming them as you listen then repeating the process, you can listen to the song and as it's playing place markers at the beats, then just drop the clips or photos in. You may have to trim a bit depending on how good you are, but the process goes much quicker that way.

That is exactly how I do it for that way I see the results right away. I suppose its just a matter of how you like doing something best.

The time saving thing is by the time you trim 2 or 3 clips you could have 40 clips roughed in with the marks, then you go and trim with the ripple tool, or how ever. I use to do it the way you are then once I tried the other way and practiced it saved a bunch of time. But whatever works best for you is the best way.
