I have just installed Premier Pro CS3 on my computer and I am having some problems with my processor. When I go to do something in Premier the processor spikes up to 100% this happens when doing very simple editing including playing a rendered clip. When the processor reaches 100%; the audio starts dropping out and the video stutters. I have a Pentium 4 processor 2.2 ghz. I also have 1.5 Gigs of ram. I realize that this is an older processor but it does meet the minimum requirements that are posted on Adobe's website. Is this a settings problem? Is there a bigger problem with my computer? I am pretty sure that my computer is free of viruses. I have read that sometimes problems like this are caused by outdated Drivers so I went and downloaded the latest drivers for my graphics card and the problem still persists. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Try making your preview monitor smaller and reduce the quality some too, that will ease up on your stuttering. If you haven't done some RAM renders, that may help too. It wouldn't be a bad thing to start saving those pennies for a new machine though.

Thanks for the reply. How do you do RAM renders? I am used to using AVID so I am trying to learn Premier and this problem is not helping. If the answer to this problem is that the CPU is not good enough to handle Premier then I am going to be pretty disappointed with Adobe. I have already spent money upgrading a computer based on the requirements on their website. If the processor I have does not work with their program then it should not have been listed in the system requirements. As everything stands now the program is unusable. I can not even scrub through an audio track without the computer becoming “laggyâ€. Honestly, I do not have the money to buy a brand new machine especially since I have spent money upgrading my current computer. Once again thanks. Does anyone else have any ideas? Make sure your hard drive fast enough and big enough to support video playback? When I first started I had similar problems until I added a new drive, that made a huge difference. James (in reply to Bobmagic) |

Are your sequence settings and the settings of your captured footage the same? Or is Premiere trying to play unrendered in real time?

Bobmagic - When I go into the task manager Premier is the CPU hog and not some other program. James - You might be on to something...When I upgraded my computer I got second "D" drive. for video storage. I am sure that this drive meets the requirements for the program. However, I installed the program on my primary "C" drive that was originally installed on the computer. To be honest I am not sure if it meets the 7200 RPM requirements for CS3. I will need to go back and look and that and possibly reinstall the program on my "D" drive. Shaun - Yes, the sequence settings are the same. I have not gotten as far as capturing footage into the machine. For starters I have just imported a Motion background for one of the ETK's and an audio track that I downloaded from the DJ Download section. It is working with this media when I noticed the problem so I did not bother going any further. To answer your other question, the problem occurs with both rendered and un-rendered footage. Once again thanks for all of the help. (in reply to Shaun C. Roemich) |

Actually you should be able to leave the program on C, just change all your working and temp directories to the D drive. Save up and get a third drive (or a 3rd & 4th drive) and put in a RAID configuration. That will significantly improve playback and writting speeds. The cheap way to do a RAID is get another drive the same size (preferabbly the same model) as the D drive, then use Windows to stripe them together, thus making a D drive that is twice the size, but also twice as fast. You will of course need to back up the data on the current D drive before doing this, as you will lose all the existing data when making it a RAID. Keep your C drive as it is and you may be good to go.

I know this'll sound wierd, but Adobe suggested it.... Do you use the Administrator account as your personal account on your box? Did you install Premier for all users? I was having a similar problem with Premier Elements. Adobe suggested that since I had installed the program for all users and was trying to run it from the Admin Account, that I instead try creating a new user and then run Premier from that account. I'll be darned, it worked (for me). Hope this helps. -Mike _____________________________ Proudly producing training videos, voice overs and audio programs for the Ford Motor Company. I had a horrible problem with Premiere being terribly slow, and I couldn't use Boris FX at all. My son told me to get rid of all of the Norton products on my PC. He assured me that I'd see a world of difference. I didn't believe him, but I was desperate and removed all Norton--Internet Security and System Works. He was right! I can't believe the difference in performance. Everything works great now. By the way, if anyone is planning to remove Norton, you can't just uninstall it. You have to go to their website and get the Norton Removal Tool. It did a good job, though. I now use AVG for antivirus and no more slow computer. Jean (in reply to MESMI) |

Norton AV is known to be one heck of a resource hogger. Don't get me wrong, the product works and does offer good protection but, it is very heavy weight on resource usage! Mark (in reply to jachang) |

How long have you been using AVG? Anti-virus only? What do you think of it so far?

I first heard about AVG from our IS guy at work. He took Norton off all the PCs and put AVG on them. He tells everyone that the first thing in PC repair is to get rid of Norton. I've only had AVG for a week or so, but I've had no problems. It automatically runs a full scan every morning at 6:00 a.m. (or whatever time you choose.) It downloads updates automatically. So far, so good. It's very easy to configure. I'm using the free version, but you can also buy the upgrade that includes Spyware protection as well. The biggest thing for me was that once I dumped Norton, I feel like I have a new computer. I actually went out shopping for a new one because I thought I had no choice. I just can't believe what a difference in how much faster the computer starts, and how much faster and better my programs all run. I figured there was no harm in checking out how things went without Norton, because I could always reinstall, if I wanted. I don't think I'll ever use Norton again, though, after seeing the difference. I just saved a couple of thousand by not having to buy a new PC. (Watch...now I'll probably get ten viruses! LOL) Jean (in reply to Winston) |

I use Avast (I don't think that is the same as AVG) and I have been happy with it. The best thing is it is free. http://www.avast.com/ _____________________________ Marc (in reply to jachang) |

Hi folks, Using AVG for a couple of years, the guys at work load it onto all new systems they build. Including mine. Had Norton on 2 systems :PC XP PRO and they eventually ground to a halt. Slow & dead Slow! I run presentations for clients in their showrooms/shops/stores and recently the guys installed VPN Client so that I could access clients screens from home. What joy. But the first thing they did was remove the Norton stuff. What a change! My AVG stuff runs on a P4 XP PRO 2 gig Ram with matroxrtx100 with Prem Pro 1.5, now the fastest it has been in 3 years (because of Norton removal, I guess.) Second new machine, for graphic design only P4 2gig Ram runs like lightening, again without Norton. Very happy with AVG. Has always alerted me without the intrusiveness. Interesting... I have heard that AVG takes longer to actually scan the files than Norton does. If it trully frees up that much of your computer a slower scan occasionally might not be a bad price to pay for a faster computer all of the time.
