No, not, really, thanks.

Ok... now that this has turned into a mutlicam editing post and I'm here today actually doing it on my day off ... WHAT A BREEZE!!!

mptribe ... no biggie switching back and forth between between multicam edit on/off.  cntrl-shft-d and you're back.  Ain't no thang.

I also love the cntrl-alt between clips if you forgot to switch cams in an edit or want to switch sooner/later.  Piece of cake.

Before taking on the task I'd just advise watching the VAAST tutorial (a few short minutes) and what do you know ... you can even easily incorporate cross fades as well.  I'm lovin it.

BTW the 3 clips I'm editing are 2 HDV and one AVCHD and so far no hiccups/crashes.  I was skeptical entering this job with one of the cams being AVCHD and anticipated problems.  I'm not done yet either but I'll report back but so far so good.

Forgive my lack of HD knowledge, but what's the difference between HD, HDV and AVCHD?

Formats...

HDV is video shot on most all mini-dv hi def cams.  It's 1440 x 1080i and when transported to your computer shows up as an MPEG-2 format with an m2t file extension.   I love it because its shot at 25Mbps and the quality is exceptional.

AVCHD on the other hand is MPEG 4 format and the H.264 codec.  This is an extremely efficient codec as it allows high quality video to be packed tighter resulting in smaller file sizes.  One primary reason why Sony and many other brands have turned to this format is because you can fit a reasonable amount of footage on portable media.  All the consumer level hi def camcorders coming out these days that utilize portable digital media are all AVCHD including many that are not portable but are hard drive based.  The one factor I don't like about AVCHD over HDV (tape based) is that the video is recorded at 15Mbps instead of 25Mbps and doesn't seem to do as well in low light.  This also records at the 1440 x 1080i rez although the latest crop of these cams are now shooting 1920 x 1080.

I have a Sony SR-8 that incorporates a 100 gig HD and can record 13 hours of the highest quality hi def video and it's primary benefit is convenience.  No tapes to worry about.  I'm mostly in good lighting so its more of a fun cam for me and the OIS is great.

Straight up HD format ... I believe we're talking the full 1920 x 1080i/p enchilada.

It's all considered HD (hi definition) but the specific HD format ... not sure as I work primarily with the other 2.

Not necessarily. Even HDCam is 1440 x 1080 stretched out to 1920 x 1080 in at least most of it's configurations. Essentially HD "proper" is less compressed, with a greater colour space (4:2:2 or 4:4:4) and can include 1080i, 1080p, 720p as well as 480p. HDV comes in 1080i and 720p variants as well although I do believe there is no 1080p support under HDV. HD would include DVCProHD100, XDCam HD, HDCam and Panasonic's offerings in the P2 line, to name a few.

You see Sony's new XDcam Shaun that records MPEG2 (virtually every HD format) onto digital media and 3 1/2" CMOS sensors?  My mouth is watering but darn they should have made that cam with a hard drive.

Did you guys see the new 4-CCD Sony DXC-1800?! 4-CCDs, switchable between CMYK and an RGBA mode. Amazing. I posted a preliminary look at the camera on vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/847613

On a totally different topic, (like the film vs. video debate) HD = more than 700 horizontal lines of resolution. I don't think there is any reason to complicate things by talking about "proper" or "professional" HD. SD could be Beta or VHS, DV25, DV50, MPEG-2, MPEG-4. Of course, the pros kept the amatuers out with the myth of "broadcast quality" back when there was only one resolution.

Very nice Eric! I've never heard of that site before. Cool. Did you say that was a proto-type  camera?

Looks cool DEF.  Just a prototype huh, any word on when they plan to release it?  It looks like a old style look on that prototype, hopefully they will pretty it up some.

Doesn't anyone remember what date it is today?
That's right, it's April 1st - aka April Fools :-)
The DXC 1800 looks old style because it is!!
It goes back to around 1980 when it first came out and is a single tube (anyone besides me remember those??) Trinicon colour camera.

Awesome stuff Eric! That must be the industry's best kept sekret. I have tons of ideas for RGBA, can't wait to get my hands on it.

Google DXC-1800 and see for yourself.
I'm not sure but I may have used one - back in the early (19)80's.

Keep forgetting to add  "Good one Eric!!"

You have GOT to be kidding me?!?

Eric, my favourite one is 'DTV: The end of (analogue) Television'.  Nice haircut, constantly looking off cam, and jewels like "government and  industry conspiracy to screw people with old analogue tv's".  GOLD!!  "I have a healthy scepticism for government mandated... anything!"  ha ha!!!  Loved it.

Are you sunburnt?

Thanks - you got serious points for recognizing the camera, Mike.

And Spoiler... sorry, I (1) can't do much with the hair, (2) the looking off camera is just bad acting and (3) it may be sun, but it's mostly bad color correction (and the image is a little soft, too) - I think the two newer segments show some improvement, at least in technical quality! I'm workin' on it! *** Keep in mind, this is just me making a fool outta myself and is not associated with DJ - wouldn't want ya'll thinking Juice's standards were slipping!***

you mean.... it's NOT a joke?!?  You're just naturally funny then!

So is this your own setup at home or something, or are you using the juice studios?

Hehe, I hope I'm funny in print, at least. The camera really isn't my friend.

And yea, it's my tiny one-car garage! Check out the Infinite White segment to see the details. What I'm trying to do is get pro results on a hobbyist budget and document the process. While this doesn't use any DJ resources, I do have one serious advantage and that is I've been working with pros for a decade now, so I know what's needed AND I know what good results are supposed to look like! Now if I could just get the audio sorted...

Well in that case I'm seriously impressed.  I thought you used the juice studios to do some spoof april fools type spots.  If you can do that in your own garage then I'm seriously impressed, it looks awesome! Are you filming and editing it yourself also, or do you have some help with that?  You're giving the average Joe out there a lot of hope!!

That is the idea, my friend: I genuinely believe that we are living in revolutionary times in terms of mass media, movies and video. For the first time in history, we have the gear and, more importantly, the means of distribution. High-quality, free, mass distribution has never been possible before. It's not like the masses are going rise up and overthrow the pros - YouTube proves that accessibility doesn't equal quality. But for those with the skills, the time and the desire, it is possible. And I figured if I was gonna talk the talk, I had better walk the walk.

Here's a great quote from the Exec. VP of Intel, Sean Maloney that I read yesterday in The Times, "The Internet is going to hit broadcast media like a ton of bricks in the next 24 months."

Too much, Eric. Great fun. I really died on the 4th CCD for the "Alpha" channel.
Well done - points to you for a funny, non-hurtful April Fool's Day "gotcha".
Very creative.

Introducing the world's first dye sublimation camera! Wet look colour because we melt crayons to get that colour subtractive look. Just add our proprietary "stay within the lines" option and you've got the same alpha control that elementary schoolchildren have with their colouring books!

You are a sick man, DEF! Well done.

Shaun, if you own Juicedrop 22 boundlessEDGE, then you own a little bit of DEF.  Look at juicedrop 2293, there's a hidden cookie for you.  For some reason they bundled DEF with aliens.
