Talk Back Answers: What products would you like to see from DJ in 2008?
Posted by David Hebel on Monday, January 07, 2008

In last week's blog entry I asked you to share your ideas for products that you would like to see Digital Juice come out with in 2008. We received more than 180 comments and we got a lot of great ideas and suggestions...

Many of the requests we received are for things that we have already talked about and are already on our radar. As much as we wish we could do it all, we just can't. We are a fairly small, self-funded company and we have to pick and choose what we do and when we do it very carefully.

That being said, here are my responses to some of your requests:

Top Requests (in no particular order):

* HD Stock Footage

We got quite a few requests for "HD VideoTraxx." I don't know if we'll ever come out with "HD VideoTraxx" in specific, but the idea of us getting into HD Stock Footage in some form or fashion is an obvious need, and is something that we are working towards. To date we haven't come out with anything like this because we are waiting for the right camera.

For maximum compatibility and future proofing we'd prefer to shoot progressive, at 60 frames per second, and at a resolution of at least 1920x1080. This is a tall order and not many cameras are able to do the job. We have our fingers crossed that the RED (www.red.com) camera may be the answer. We are currently somewhere around #320 in the waiting queue to get our RED camera. We hope to have it in our studio sometime in the next few months. If all goes well, and it meets the mark, we'll be able to start producing a new line of HD Stock Footage in early 2008.

* More themed Editor's Toolkit Pro Sets

We have good news for those of you asking for more themed Editor's Toolkits. Yes! We do plan to make more themed Toolkits this year, including volumes for wedding, worship, and sports. But we also want to explore more styles and some broader themes such as "Spring", "Fall", "Summer", etc. We believe that the way we are now packaging our new Pro Toolkits will allow us to a lot more themes and styles in the future.

* SmartSound Compatibility

We floated the idea of SmartSound compatibility in one of our DJ Polls a few months back. The news is... we are currently working with the good folks at SmartSound to work out the details of how we can partner to bring SmartSound functionality to Stacktraxx songs. It's a big task and we've already determined that a simple plug-in approach isn't going to work. Each song will have to be looked at and reworked to make it compatible. At this point in time, I think there is a 'better than not' chance that we'll be able to do something in this direction in 2008.

* More Cinematic Music

We have another volume in the works right now.

* Virtual Sets

We talk about virtual sets every year and we've thought a lot about what the best approach to this might be. The reason we haven't come out with them yet is that we would want them to work for as many people as possible and we'd like to offer some level of customization to the end user. The Juicer's engine is almost to the point where we could seriously consider *something* along the lines of Virtual Sets. Stay tuned.

* Layered Jump Backs

As with Virtual Sets we look at this every year and talk a lot about what would be the best approach. Not every type of Jump Back would work well as a "layered" animation. However, the concept is a good one and would give a lot of flexibility and control to the user (which is something that we like to do!). Making that flexibility easy and accessible would be the key to the product's success. Ideally users should be able to manipulate the layers in The Juicer, in After Effects, and/or in Motion. The ability to at least turn layers on or off in the Juicer and export them separately (similar to the way our StackTraxx music works) would be a great start. The Juicer engine is capable of handling this, it's just a matter of figuring out how we would need to design the user interface and then come up with animations that would work well in layers.

The biggest concern is the size of the files. Each layer in theory would be as big or bigger than a Jump Back!

* Downloads

Many people have suggested that we offer our content for sale as downloadable files. We agree that this is a good idea, and we're working on it now. While we don't have deep enough pockets or a large enough customer base to risk converting everything to downloads in a single step, look for us to release some content as downloads this year. There are a lot of issues we need to work out with the 'model' and perhaps we'll ask for your input in a future TalkBack. You may pay a bit more per clip for individual downloads but you'll be able to get what you want, when you want it, and more often.

Winner of the Best Comment - Marc Einbinder

When I first started reading through all the comments, I wasn't sure how I was going to pick a comment winner. Many of the comments were very straightforward requests. I just figured the winner would somehow stick out and I'd know it when I saw it.

That's exactly what Marc's comment did. I picked his comment because Marc came up with a new product concept and then went on to specifically give examples of how it might be created, how it would work and how it could be used.

This doesn't mean that we're going to rush right out and make a "Spotlights" product, but I felt his comment was the most original, most specific, and most unique. It stood out from the rest. And so Marc is the winner of a $25 2008 Digital Juice Gift Certificate.

Here's Marc's comment:

"How about an MDE volume of "Spotlights" used to highlight text and/or logo elements? After seeing the MDE's in ETK Pro #19, I think an MDE volume of "Spotlights" would be real useful. Ideas for spotlights could be anything from lighthouses shining beams of light downwards to highlight text/logos in the "lower third" area of the screen, to a teddy bear holding a flash light for child themed productions, to an open jewelry box with a diamond ring shooting a light beam out from the diamond, to the statue of liberty shinning a beam of light out from her torch, which would be good in patriotic themed productions. The light beams themselves could be different shapes shuch as the regular circle, a star shape, a heart shape, etc. Also, the light beams could be of different colors as well as perhaps some having a faint stream of particles in them. Some would have light beams pointing upwards, and some pointing downwards.

A companion volume of "Spotlight Revealers" could also be created with either one spotlight shining a beam of light from one side of the screen to the other, or two spot lights (one on the left side of the screen and one on the right side) having their beams of light coming together and than reversing direction to reveal a text/logo element.

This would be good because as useful as the current MDE Revealers are, they all appear and then disappear. However, having a "spotlight revealer" where the base light remains on the screen would help to create a thematic look. You could use a regular revealer to reveal the spotlights and than they would reveal the text/logos. Think opening title sequences in video presentations where you have multiple elements to reveal such as names of people in the video presentation, production company names, marketing slogans, etc. Than, regular revealers to remove the spotlights before moving on to the main video."

Thanks for the great suggestion, Marc! And thanks to everyone who posted a comment or suggestion. We're always interested in hearing what you think and we consider every recommendation carefully. Thanks for being part of the Digital Juice community! We're looking forward to great things in 2008.

And Editors Toolkit focused on Energy would sure come in handy. Or an Energy-themed jumpback volume. It could feature oil drilling, oil pumping, electricity generation, power plants, nuclear plants, oil tankers, air conditioners, gasoline pumps, themostats, power grids, power lines, etc.
FYI, I own about 50 jumpbacks, 5 of the original toolkits, 2 Power Cuts, 6 of the Editor Toolkit Pros, 15 volumes of music 20 MDE sets, 10 swipes. all the VideoTraxx BackTraxx 1 and 2, about 15 volumes of StackTraxx and the soundeffects Library. Obviously I love your products and my clients are always amazed!!!

Hi DJ friends,

I definitely agree with those who have already suggested that (some or most) DJ content be made available for download. Several times already since I discovered DJ (several years back), I've wanted to take advantage of a new product offer / special under $20 but the shipping charges make it prohibitive for me to make such purchases. For example, just today (2/29/2008) I received the DJ e-mail offer for the $14.95 Revealers #21 product. At this time, since I already own most of DJ's other inventory, I didn't want to order anything additional....just the Revealers #21. But I didn't because of the reason stated above.... this is not the first time I've had to forgo ordering an item that I would have purchased would it be available for download.

So, as I see it, a download option seems like it may be beneficial to both DJ and DJ customers alike.

Sincerely,
Louie Gedo

I am relativly new to Digital Juice products and was just wondering. Is there any chance you might offer the animated overlays that are in your Editors Tool Kit as a stand alone plug-in. Or will they remain a part of the Tool Kit?

I absolutely agree with Barbara R. about the need for some medical/pharmaceutical ETKs. To my knowledge there is nothing on the market for this industry without paying thousands of dollars. It could have different cell structures moving through the veins and arteries, or even different animations of the anatomy like the heart, brain, liver, lungs. The joints would be great too. There really is a need in the small medical office industry for marketing videos and tutorials, but us videographers really have nothing to use make the video look good, so its hard to even offer services to the industry. this type of ETK could open up an entire new market for your customers. I really hope you take this into consideration.

What about a mixed product for 3D designers & Video Editor's together ??
by other words ... a modified product mix between 3D Sceens and the final project
as an example: Digital Juice can Render the project in many sceens or shots as usuall, then include the working files with the final product
This will be great from those 3D designers who has a special vision in their work ..... it will be as a powerful product for both video editors and 3D designers.
Note: sorry that my english is not good

We could really use some Apple Motion templates. I would like to see more print products. I really would like you to expand Editors Toolkit Pro Mega Library collection. I like the initial collection, I want to see more products like this. DJTV are really good, I think it would be nice if you offered some NLE, Motion or After Effects specific training. I love Digital Juice, I pretty rely on you exclusively for my digital media assets. Please use 2008 to introduce new cutting edge products that your loyal Juicer's need and rely on you for.

Thank You,

Sebastian

I work for Air Force Television at the Pentagon where we have many, many Juice products (from as far back as 6 or 7 years ago). What we could really use is an ETK/MDE/JB/Swipes/Revealers package with generic miltary themes, PLUS segments broken down into the various Service Branches (for us, specifically USAF, but then others will need Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard-specific themes).

Thanks for listening, and keep up the great work that you folks do!

I would love to see a medical/pharmaceutical themed Editor's toolkit, as well as Swipes and Jumbacks in that theme. I'd buy that as soon as it came out.

Sorry I am late! I would love to be able to add my own keywords to DJ items for searching in the Juicer! Keep up the good work!!

As I reviewed existing files of art in previous JUICEDROPS, I could find some of the images I could use for a design needed for a municipal account. While many of the images are very nice, I could not locate enough images to carry a municipal theme across several pages (i.e., I can find firefighters and police in POPLIFE, but no female judge in the same style... or enough variety of images that could be used for -- let's say -- Water Works...). I might be able to force some of the images, but what I am suggesting is a follow-up edition to older themes like POPLIFE II or LIFESHADES II that could give us even more variety in the same creative style. (or better yet, a specific series focused on municipal services like Economic Develpment, Judicial, Police/Fire, Finance, Legislative, Engineering, Water/Wastewater, Parks/Rec, Administration) It may even be possible that the artists have a few already started that did not make the cut in the original release... I believe print designers run

I am extremely new to Digitaljuice and video editing in general, so I am not sure of the correct terminology to use, but here goes...I would love to see some background shots that look like different rooms, ie. a doctor's office, a business office, a classroom, a symphony hall, etc. These may already be available somewhere and I just don't know where to find them, if so, please tell me where I should look. Thank you.

Thank you for all the support--your tutorials and great products give the hope that I can figure all this stuff out!

My suggestion (late in coming I realize) is for more corporate-friendly Jump Backs, MDE's, Editor's Toolkits, and StackTraxx. You offer plenty of "broadcast style" elements, but often these are too bold and overbearing to use in more demure corporate productions without serious customization.

In particular, I'd like to see more flat (non-3D) elements, especially MDE's, which would not be distracting to a corporate message. You have a big selection of 3-D object-related backgrounds and elements; I'd like to see a bigger offering of flatter design-related elements (for instance, such as those found in the Control Panels MDE volume).

But overall, you are single-handedly changing the landscape of the small production house business. Keep up the good work!

Some great ideas. I edit video for a church and our Worship Pastor writes some great worship songs. It would be great if he and other composers could submit their songs for use in a Worship Stack Tracks. I could really use these where I can pull the vocals and/or instruments out under interview dialog. Do you think there will be a chance for this to happen?

I second (or third) the motion to make SmartSound (Strata Series, the multi layered music offering,if possible). After you use SmartSound, everything else becomes "confining". Basically, if you find one good cut in the Strata Series, it's like you can score the whole video with one track and never repeat the music (you can add/subtract individual instrument tracks) unless you intend to. The track can be two seconds or ten minutes, it's like the exact sound was composed for the exact scene. (No, I don't work for SmartSound!)

I have virtual sets from Serious Magic Ultra, (now bought up by Adobe, now Adobe Ultra). Cool stuff, especially the tracking shots. Of course that would limit you people who have Ultra. What I really want is real backgrounds as opposed to CGI backgrounds that can be green-screened. A real news set where you can green screen in people. A real library. A real hallway. A real castle. A real space station, okay maybe not, but real, not graphics. Etc.

I would like to see more whimsical Jump backs. Such as a "60's and 70's" theme. Flower power, hippie icons, peace signs and such. Also, weather, occasions, holidays, seasons, nature. I loved the creepy halloween jump backs. I have Back Traxx music library one and two, Swipes collection one through 10, Editor's Tool Kit 10, Jump Backs..fresh crawl and simply useful. Your products are great.

I have two suggestions:

1. If you can make DVD menu templates that would work in Premiere Pro 2 (others as well) with the same customization that would be fantastic! I have been looking at those in the program and since I do military work and industrial (engines, etc) it is difficult to find something that truly matches.

2. I also do "memorial" videos that are played at funeral services. There isn't a wide variety of things to use for funeral/memorial videos. Some backgrounds (juice drops) and swipes along those lines would be great as well!

For the home movie conversion, skateboarding graphics seem to be minimal.

Otherwise, I have a huge collection so far and continue to add. Thank you for the great products!

I thnak you for the free chequered flag swipe. Would you consider a chequered flag MD element in the style of the way it is waved at the finish of car races?

Also I have searched my DJ stuff and your galleries and cannot spot the tooth 'ping' star to indicate a smile. Am I wrong, is it out there and if not would you consider including this on some volume in the future?

I would love to see more grab bag (etc) stuff with chroma key cabability. Example: a television screen that pops up and stays up for awhile with green on the screen instead of static/snow, so that we could insert our own pictures/video via chroma key.

I would like to be able to use Swipes with the SF3 library. I do not have SF2 and it seems all swipes volumes use SF2 for the audio output. Do you have a work around or is this feature coming soon.

I would really love to have some collections of DVD Studio Pro templates with matching animations, buttons, and so on.

Congratulation everyone on all these fantastic suggestions.
I seem to remember there was talk about some animated fonts early last year
At some time some were posted as examples and they looked great and a lot of fun.
Were they ever published and did I miss something or did you guys hit a hitch in the production of these.
Thank again for your great services DJ

Wow! I won?!?! There were so many good suggestions. Thanks Dave and everyone! I'm sure 2008 will be a "Juicy" year from DJ. Melanie...to answer your question, I ran out of room so I continued my thought in a post right below my initial posting. Also, in case Dave reads this just want to add to my suggestion that it wouldn't be impossible to create a volume of Spotlight Swipes. It would be more involved, but not impossible! Thanks again!!

A volume of MDEs with a media theme (especially audio-related). Things like bouncing waveforms, radio towers putting out signals, microphones, cameras shooting, studio lights, etc. I've been beggin' for this one for over a year.

I'm really happy to hear about the additional Cinimatic Stack Traxx in the pipeline. I love both them and the Serious traxx and will be waiting with bated breath.

Congrats, Marc! Easy to see why your post stood out. Plus, it's a great idea! I have one question: how did you post such a long thread when it's limited to 1,000 characters?

What about TRADE-IN'S??? I liked the idea of buying particular elements from the new ETK's last week too! Sometimes there are things in a tool kit that you KNOW you'll never use! That would eliminate the need to buy EVERYTHING on a DVD.
Posted on 1/7/2008 by Brad Jones, BBB Communications

More exciting stuff to look forward to from DJ!!!! Yahoooo!!!!
Congrats Marc, great idea!

I know it has been suggested before, but as the DJ products library grows so does the need for the ability to put all of this content on a dedicated drive and be able to use it from there. I would love to be able to put my entire collection on an external drive and be able to use it on the road or hooked up to my main system and eliminate the entire CD process. While this would be time intensive to transfer everything originally, it would save so much time in the long run. Thanks for considering it, just consider it faster ;-)

Congrats Marc on the win. If I couldn't win, then it is nice to see another Marc that knows how to spell his name correctly can win. No offense to those that spell it with a K or otherwise.

DH, thanks for listening.

I am in desperate need of GOOD stock photos, juice drops are great for print work but more times than not I find myself trying to find and use photos from the editor's multi purpose tools and sometimes have trouble with resolution and overall quality when trying to blow the images up for poster size prints. I would be wiling to purchase a huge library of stock photography if givin the chance.
