Secrets of the Juicer - Tips & Tricks Part 1

Can you add a feature please?
One of the jobs of the Juicer 3 application team is to evaluate customer requested features that come in from the Digital Juice web site or other sources. We get a lot of requests. Most are well thought out ideas that get screened and added to the software development plan right away. On rare occasions however, we learn a lesson about our hastiness in responding to customer requests for new features.

This was the case recently when someone on the DJ Forums requested that we enhance the color picker dialog that is available for the Colorize options in the Settings Panel(under Layer > Effects > Simple/Duo/Tri Colorize). The idea was simple and made a lot of sense: Why not add an eye drop type button that allows the end user to pick a color from their desktop or other application window?

Ummmm... it already does that
As the request was passed onto the development team, there was an immediate response that the Juicer already provided the requested functionality, albeit in a slightly different form that was somewhat lacking in the ole' intuitive-ness department. It also turned out that the feature somehow went largely undocumented, so it was very likely many users had no idea the feature ever existed. Hence the title of this blog post, "Secrets of the Juicer". If it was a secret to me, I'm sure it is a secret to most of you.

After some discussion with the team, we've decided to tackle the problem with a two pronged approach. Firstly we need to make the feature more intuitive in a future release of the Juicer. We will do that. Secondly, we thought it important to share the secret of the Juicer 3's color picking power as soon as we discovered that some users may not know about it's existence.

The following flash tutorial provides detailed step-by-step instructions to get the color picker working for you. In addition it also takes you through the process of copying and pasting attributes. We hope you find it useful!

Please make available in an iPod format. Not sure why you changed. Much handier when I want to take with me and have a few minutes to have and review.

The Flash (SWF) file can be found in your Temporary Internet Files folder. Only takes a couple seconds to move/copy/save it elsewhere for later/offline viewing.

Please keep your web videos in Quicktime. I save them to my disk so I can have them for reference later. You've also made your other videos iPod compatible, which gives us plenty of flexibility. Flash is not nearly as friendly that way.

Great, but how do we save it for future reference???

Humm not sure..... the stepping .......
You should rename the process Tip no 1 should be Step no 1 etc. Because it is the same tip all along.

Another non-obvious thing...

When looking at editor toolkit pro in the juice and, say, drilling down to backgrounds. There's no obvious way to go back...Frustrating! I would either skip looking at stuff, or click on hd (if I was in sd), and then back down.

Then noticed a TINY little blue-blending-hard-to-target back-button-ish looking "arrow" near the top...WHEW! Now that I know it's there, it's useful (though still hard to target...check out "Fitt's Law").

Making this a little bigger and a little less blendy would be nice :-)

Very impressed. I am actually the one who made the suggestion for an eyedropper tool in the forums. Thanks for the info - now I know I don't have to wait for an update to get the function I am looking for. This shows to everyone that you really do listen to your customers.

Nicely done. I can't believe I've been using the Juicer this long and didn't ever notice the copy attributes option. That'll come in handy! Thanks!

That's really cool!! Hey, not to nitpick or anything, but on the last slide, shouldn't "your done" be "you're done"? ;)

Hey thanks, that is good stuff to know and will make the Juicer even more valuable and easy to use.

Good Job Guys .. Really informative.

I do have a question though. I normal copy the Jumpback or ETK element i want to colorize to my drive and then take it into after effects to do what this is doing. Is there a difference between the quality that AE does and the Juicer does? I find that doing it in AE is alot quicker if i take the raw file off the disk and mess with the quicktime in ae it then resizes and does what I need it to do all in one app.
