Uploaded on 1/11/2007 by james walsh, JPI Creative Group  (Show Portfolio)

PROBLEM: Create an Awards show open for a live audience of over 1500 engineers that will make them stand up and say WOW! SOLUTION: Multi Screen Interactive Video Dubed Horizon for it's expansive landscape and interactivity between the screens, HORIZON was originally designed and ultimatelly played across 3 20' screens for 1500 guests. This piece starts of in black letting the sound effects set the mood as the three videos are introduced. DJ sound effect library and jumpbacks were used throughout this piece. This presentation was very challenging to both shoot and edit as three separate DVDs had to be create and then syncronized to play frame accuratly as one. Nine months and many sleepless nights later it was done Thanks for listening ENJOY In April of 2007 this video won the 2007 EMMY Award for Technical Achievement !

That was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

Why did it take so long? 9 Months? God built the world in 6 days! :) (But then again, it didn't turn out as great as this)!

Incredible! Stupendous! Marvelous! Humbling!

Like Greg, I too would like to learn more about frame syncing DVD players. Got a book coming out soon? or better yet, a DVD?

Thanks for your submission.

I'm sure whatever I may say will not make much of an impact after having received an Emmy award, but there is no way I could leave this page without saying something, even if the something is only this: "I'm speechless!"

Well deserved Emmy. Great job.

Tremendous work. I'm surprised anyone gave you less than 5 stars for this (to get 4.99 someone must have!). It gives tremendous motivation to others to come up with something not only high-quality but also creative and inventive. Pretty much in line with the theme it espouses!

Another WOW! here. While very few others mentioned it, I think the audio track is simply perfect. While video is obviously important for a visual medium, it would be nothing without the audio. The audio evokes the emotion. And you've executed perfectly! I had goosebumps watching (and listening.) The music is perfect. And the sound effects really bring it home. Of course, the 3-screen effect is also spectacular. But I think it's safe to say everyone agrees on that one. GREAT JOB!

This video is absolutely outstanding! I couldn't take my eyes off the screen - I mean "screens"!

How many stars? Where are all the stars? I only have a choice of 5 here! Who took all the stars? If you have any stars, bring them back here!! This video needs more stars!!!

Oh well. Two and a half thumbs up! (You might need help with this one)

You are seriously creative and you work way too hard! I'd like to hire you for my company, but maybe I should quit and come work for you!!

i most certainly agree this should be in a best of showcase or something, James, you have done a fantastic thing showing people how well this can be done.
i wanted to note for everyone with the questions about the dvd sync: that is one way to do it, and i have researched a few others.

one way would be using an edirol dv-7pr. these can be set up in a master/slave setting so that one will control as many as you want (with each driving one screen)
an example of this is here:
http://www.edirol.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=160&Itemid=395#
in case i cant post links, edirol.com and then stories, check out the BigStuf conference, and look at the ocean floor video. they are using 9 of the dv-7prs to drive the screens. its amazing.

a new software that can also do it is pro video player, google it. this can actually do the work for you of splitting up the original video into whatever screen configuration you tell it. takes one mac to run each screen though.

again Jam

I did a three screen video for my local police department. NOthing this great though, and the outer two screen ran the same stuff. I just used two DVD players and split the output of the outside screen one, and had a remote for both, and just pressed play at the SAME time. They may have been a millisecond off, but since what I was doing was mostly video on the outer screens, and titles in the center, they didn't need to be sunk (synced) exactly. GREAT video none the less.

Thanks to the 13 Deals of Christmas I now own 40 different Digital Juice products. If I could give you more than five stars I would. You deserve a whole galaxy of them for this work!

That's the best thing I've seen on DJ Showcase...ever.

Just phenomenal.

Honestly, as much as I'm impressed with the production, I'm even more impressed (and I think there's a lesson here for the rest of us) that you even dreamed up this concept in the first place.

It serves as a valuable reminder (for me, anway) that no matter how far along one's editing skills may have progressed, the biggest limitation one has is often in direct proportion to how much or how little they let their imagination wander.

Big-time kudos to you! Not only is this video extremely impressive, but it is profoundly inspiring.

Truly a great idea and fantastic outcome. Your time on this was definitely seen in the production of this. Awesome!

Hey Digital Juice.....

Miguel had a great idea here. Why not set up a Showcase Hall of Fame? This is a guaranteed inductee that should be available for viewing for a long time to inspire us mere mortals. Plus it's not a bad idea to maybe draw more people to the site.

Just a thought.

Truly Phenomenal! Not only technically but your creative talent is unmatched. How you came up with the ideas is beyond my scope. When does your How-To book come out and sign me up for your first class - I'm in the front row. I think you made the engineers say more than WOW! Great Work!

Awesome work James! The audio really carried the emotion well. Great pacing and timing. I'm so jealous that you had nine months to do the one project. Just goes to show what can be created when time and talent get to mix. The only complaint I have, is with such a great production, couldn't they have sprung for something larger that three 20 inch TVs? It should have been on 20 foot displays for a crowd that size.
A strong, obvious 5 stars.

I truely don't know what to say but THANK YOU! for all the extraodinary compliments.
This job was technologically very challenging as we had to develop a special rig to shoot with three cameras as one. Editing across three timelines was also alot of fun as well as creating moving graphics in maya at 2160 x 480 and then spliting them up amongst the three timelines.

Then there was the playback issue. At first I had planned on using a SONY MAV 550 (a braodcast digital disc recorder used primeraly for slo-mo during sporting events) but this machine it turned out was out of the clients budget.

This forced me to turn to a more cost effective solution. Knowing that I needed to be frame acurate I knew that I needed to have DVD players that had black burst and RS232 ports (Pioneer 7400 industrial DVD) to support a GPI trigger that would start them all at exactly the same time and would not drift out of sync buy the end of the program.
Once again thanks for the compliments

You have now official god-like status in the showcase.
This production is absolutely breath-taking... and a
bit overwhelming to us mere video-producing mortals.

This is the PERFECT example of what can be achieved if
you pour your mind and soul into a production.

Thanks for this amazing, inspiring and educational upload. =)

Absolutely SENSATIONAL! Having been involved in a lot of Tourism Awards shows in Australia, I have seen some pretty creative stuff, but nothing even remotely close to this! I would love to know hoe the effect of the camera angle leaving into outer space is created. I have seen the 3 projector sync display before but never content that good. Congratulations and I hope the Engineers had the hair stand on the back of their neck like mine was.

NINE months and many sleepless nights. Time and dedication always brings out great work. It's awesome and very creative using the 3 screens and 3 DVDs.

WOW indeed!! Not just technically cool, but REALLY REALLY beautiful to look at and listen to! 9 months well spent! It's like a pregnancy, and now you've got this beautiful kid!

Seriously...5 stars! How did you upload that aspect ratio? Just get permission from JP?

I'd like to kno how you synced up the discs as well. Unless you put them on an automated player like a Mini-T (by Leightronix), then I don't have a clue.

GREAT WORK!!!! This is one that just makes me drop my jaw (literally) and wonder at the human brain! Congrats!

WOW! This is truly amazing and gorgeous. Plus it kept my attention throughout the piece. It is a work of art. BEAUTIFUL. So much to get inspired about in this piece. It works even as a standalone open or intro on a single screen. I can't even imagine it on three screens.

A work of art. 15 stars from me. Oops. I guess I am limited to 5 stars.
