One of my favorite cookies/gobo tricks is really fast and simple. I always keep a couple sheets of blackwrap foil in the light kit. If I need to break up a background, I take a sheet about 12 inches square and stab it repeatedly full of holes with a Bic pen; looks like the shower scene from Psycho when I do this. (try laying the foil on carpet to do the holes) Some of the holes I'll enlarge or round out with the pen or a finger. You can also trace slashes or freehand patterns with a 50-cent xacto knife and punch out the shapes. This gets clipped to the barndoors of a defocused Lowel 1K open-faced light and voila, instant breakup. You can change the feel by adding a colored gel to the stack (on the side away from the bulb, and with an air gap so it doesn't touch the hot foil). For a super-cool effect, do this on two lights at 45 degrees either side of center, gel one blue, leave the other natural, overlap the beams and you get a stylized white clouds on blue sky effect on what was a bl

Excellent! Thanks, Perry, for showing how to set up a scene with a minimal amount of equipment!
Good stuff and excellent presentation, as usual. Keep up the great work!

Awesome again Perry!
I keep thinking I'm going to get some lights but I haven't convinced myself yet to do so. With these simple tips I can now see that even on a budget and only two lights you can make your shots look great.
Do you shoot these episodes by yourself or is someone behind the camera? It looks like your going back and forth controlling the camera.

Great job as always Perry. Nice tips.
I'd love to see either a list of lighting, reflectors, etc. at the end of the clips, with maybe a link address to where we can find the items...
.....but, I know businesses hate to promote other products, so if you could just give us an idea of where to find the equipment, that would be great....maybe specific keywords to type into a search engine would help.
....now, about that leopard print shirt collar....LMAO

Perry
Wow what a great job, I always look forward to your info. So much to learn, so little time. How well you can look with the right lighting. Only a suggestion but the small (lights camera action) piece after your intro seems a bit long and we have all seen it now and thought I might bring it up just as an FYI. Maybe shorten it or come up with a different one monthly... Just my 2 cents.... Otherwise fantastic job

I hope the viewers realize that DJTV is actually giving them a fantastic education, equal to or better than what they'd pay big bucks for at a trade school or university. Having done this stuff for over 30 years, I marvel at the quality and creativity you guys bring to these mini-lessons. All are well-done and get right to the point, teaching the right stuff, and not imtimidating the newbies. Eat it up, boys and girls. It doen't get any better than this. Great job, Perry and DJTV!

Very amusing and informative as usual! Be careful with those radio mics rubbing against your shirt, as this meant the sound could have been better. Maybe a topic for another show! Otherwise great work Perry, as always.

Very good and appreciated, but it would have been very helpful if you would have shown exactly where "the lawyer" was standing in your lighting setup. It looks like right smack dab in front of that 1000 watt light, but how did the camera not pick up the gold reflector? It's all in the details <smile> and I would like to see more of those.

Rock solid information...concise delivery...you rule! Thanks for including the wattage of the lightbulbs; I like the bloopers you have been including.

You guys make this look so easy it is fantastic to watch. Thanks Perry and DJ for doing these shows. Awesome work as usual.

Nice one Perry and thanks for all these budget-friendly ideas.
QUESTION FROM LAST WEEK'S EPISODE - how do you set up the lighting you had at the beginning of that episode? That will be a good future lesson too (Turn Tables).

These little tutorials are the best resourses around. Many BRAVOS for bring excellence to us who struggle to improve our excellence.

Once again I learn a cheap and effective way for lighting. I was expecting on having to spend so much money on lighting. However, thanks to Perry, I now know how I can get by with just two 1000W lights. Thanks Perry and Digital Juice...look forward to next week's tip.

Fantastic stuff!! Great for us budget minded or as my wifes says, DJ poor, folks out here. Since I've given it all to your salemen I need these super tips. 5 stars.

Once again Perry, Thank You! The production values of your clips are awesome, and your delivery is definitely 5 stars!

5 STARS ALL THE WAY PERRY!!!! One more tip that I never learned in film school. DJTV really gives me the extra "OOMPH" to push myself on new techniques. School got me the basics and DJTV reiterated that, but the advanced techniques like this and green screens and all is something that I NEVER learned in all my years of school. You've outdone yourselves again Perry!! Keep them coming!!

Good show! I plan on having my students watch this for class & take notes. One more thing I don't have to prepare & the students can watch this over & over.
Thank you again!

Perry, You rock. Please do not ask me for tution fees. I am glued to my system looking for training instructions from you. (DJTV).
One quick note, can you also tell us the names and make of the products that you use, with its pricing. (lighting equipment etc.)
Thanks a Million. Dave Vasudevan

Nice job Perry. I am one of those "less is best" folks who like to use minimal lighting. Best way to keep background out of focus and concentrate on main subject. Maybe something on inexpensive filters for effects and neutral density?

Another great segment. Thanks for making your lessons fun to learn! As always, I enjoy the endings. You need to a make an entire episode on bloopers or blubbers that you have done in the past providing these awesome segments. I cannot wait for another lesson. Keep up the great work! 5 Stars always!

Perry, Outstanding Job. Just what we all need, simple tips that make our work better. Keep them coming. Thanks

Great stuff. You must have built that physique from lifting those sand bags you hang on your light stands.
![]()
You continue to wow me. Im not sure if there is anything in the forums about this, but where do you get the lights, stands, clamps and softboxes. I am extremly new to this but am looking into getting into doing a lot more. Thanks again Perry

I love the conceal/reveal aspect of your videos when you introduce them. It's that kind of creativity that sparks my imagination in particular. I'm doing everything I can not to outright copy what you do, but to instead apply it to my own videos in unique ways. Thanks for keeping those gears turning!

Perry you rule, I would hope that some talent scout out in Cali finds and scoops you away to big screen stardom but I'm selfish and want you stay and keep producing for DJ. Keep it up.

What's there to say; there's not much to talk about! Perry Jenkins, as usual, has said and done it all. You guys at Digital Juice are awesome. I wish other companies would follow your lead with speed.
Keep on keeping on!!!

Where to start? Now this was perfect for us small users out here. I just bought my first two lights, because two was all I could afford right now, and I thought "wow, I gotta save up more money for a third light!"
Woo hoo! WRONG!!! Thank you PERRY! Great stuff! Looking good as always, with the information hitting right on the mark! Plus, the blooper at the end was hillarious! See ya next week!!!!
im hooked ill admit at first i thought the info would revolve mostly around all dj products and attempt to sell them. The info is very good and good for advanced and novice editors..
