Editor’s Toolkit: Using Transitional Wipes with Apple® Final Cut Pro®

The black and white transitional wipes in the Editor's Toolkits are used to transition from one clip to another, using the animated matte to define the transparency between the two clips.

A black and white Transition Wipe from an Editor's Toolkit is used in this example to transition from one clip to another.

To use a transition wipe (matte) in Apple® Final Cut Pro®:

1. Arrange your clips on the timeline (transitioning from A-Roll to B-Roll - Figure 1):

* Video 3: A-Roll
* Video 2: transition matte
* Video 1: B-Roll

2. Select the clip in V3 (the A-Roll or outgoing clip in the transition).

3. From the Modify menu, select Composite Mode > Travel Matte - Luma (Figure 2).

Figure 2 - Select the clip in V3 and then Modify > Composite Mode > Travel Matte - Luma.

4. In most cases, you will need to render the effect to see the final results.
