Editor’s Toolkit: Using Transitional Wipes with Adobe® Premiere®

The black and white transitional wipes in the Editor's Toolkits are used to transition from one clip to another, using the animated matte to define the transparency between the two clips.

A black and white Transition Wipe from an Editor's Toolkit is used in this example to transition from one clip to another.

To use a transition wipe (matte) in Adobe® Premiere®:

1. Arrange your clips on the timeline (transitioning from A-Roll to B-Roll - Figure 1):

* Video 3: transition matte
* Video 2: A-Roll
* Video 1: B-Roll

Figure 1 - The timeline in Premiere® with a transition wipe.

2. Add a Track Matte Key to the clip on Video 2: Effects > Video Effects > Keying > Track Matte Key.

3. In the Effects Control window (for the clip on Video 2), select the Track Matte Key and set the Matte to Video 3 (Figure 2).

Figure 2 - In the Track Matte Key Effect Control for the clip in Video 2. Set the Matte to "Video 3" and the Composite Using mode to "Matte Luma."

4. Set Composite Using to Matte Luma (Figure 2).

5. Click the Toggle Track Output off for the Video 3 track (Figure 3).

6. If you preview the transition, you'll see that it all works, except that the A-Roll in Video 2 does not show up anymore. To fix this, copy and past the clip from Video 2 into a new track on Video 4 and trim it back so it doesn't cover the transition. You can do a little more trimming for neatness (Figure 4), but this isn't strictly necessary.
